Chainsaw Muffler Modifications

modified mufflerIncrease the power and performance of your chain saws with muffler modifications by ScottWojo

Modifications are custom and hand made for practically every saw, you can either supply your own muffler or I can purchase a new one then modify it for you.

Stainless spark arrestor screens are fitted so you comply with local fire regulations. Workmanship is top class and my ebay feedback is excellent.

Muffler prices vary a lot however some examples are as follows.

Basic mod when you send your muffler starts at $75.

modified mufflerStihl MS460 is $75 plus the cost of the muffler unless of course you send yours to me.

Stihl MS660 is $85 plus the cost of the muffler and again if you send yours to me then it's just the work you need to pay for.

Mufflers need to be in reasonably good condition if you are going to send it to me, also depending on the muffler often I only require the front cover.

Saws will have to be RE-TUNED when you fit the modified muffler. It's important you get this right, a tacho is great but you can also do it by ear if you are experienced, this site has a some tuning information with a wav sound file. Please do understand that I cannot take responsibiltiy for your saws problems if you dont tune them correctly.

You can expect to get approximately 20% more power out of a saw with a muffler modification. You'll find your saw will have more HP and torque, generally run a lot smoother and more responsive.

Anyway, you can buy direct using Paypal right here and I'll ship anywhere in the world, freight costs in addition to the muffler modification cost would be minimal for such a light part.

You'll save fuel because you are cutting so much faster and that will mean less noise too!

Seriously, I had a modded saw, muffler job etc and it was slightly louder but not that much nor distinctively much. On the fuel side of things I didn't really notice a difference either.

Also, Scott. Which way does that tube point ... away from the bar? As currently when you are cutting stumps low and on some trees it gets pretty bad blowing dirt and crap onto the saw chain. On paperbarks I've set them on fire with the hot exhaust blasting at the bark. Looks like here the tube is pointed away from the cut or when lying the saw on it's side for a finishing stump cut blowing away from the "action area". Just need Scott to confirm that ... then again he could point that tube where-ever I suppose as they are custom made.

The new piped port gives the saw a nice deep throaty note, Yes it is louder. And of course with more power comes slightly higher fuel consumption, but also more lubrication and lower operating temperatures.

Yes Eric that is correct.

As you hold the saw in front of you in bucking position, the hot gas exits to the left and forward of the handle. Yes, I could pipe the exhaust any way you like, and I could also lengthen the pipe and run a support to another part of the saw to protect the cylinder from stress.

Hey, no hurry. Just that your saw will live longer the sooner you get one. I am also, going to try to get hooked up with Max Flow air cleaners and offer some sort of kit with a modded muffler.

Thanks,
Scott.

I am in the preliminary stages of setting it up. I have no Idea what the Max Flow will cost. I know I want to marry the two together in a package. In order to sell them I would have to be competitively priced. So, when I know more or if customers demand the packages, without a doubt I will offer great prices and super values.

Thank you for your your question and more importantly, thank you for your support.

With Great Esteem,
Scott.

Sir, The last time I stated prices in open forum, I opened the gates of hell. (AS group buy) So, I sent a PM with a price. And I quoted a price for the highest quality bar available. I sell chains and other stuff as well. All are higher quality than most people are accustomed to from their local dealers.

Thanks,
Scott.

Scott

I have a normal ms440 purchased from USA.

Nothing special about that.

Now here's a proposal for you.

What I would like to do is run a bunch of timed cuts through a nice, parallel, consistent palm log.

Then swap out the muffler on the same saw and run some timed cuts with your muffler.

All to be recorded on video in real time.

So as to ensure no BS enters about chains being dull etc I will fit a brand new chain for each trial.

If you can send me over a muffler, once swapped I can send you back one too, a brand new one untouched.

Is it a deal? I'll PM you my address.

Absolutely, Do you have any special requests as to the cover? I can port it in any direction and make it with or without the spark screen. If you tell me what kind of bar your running I can sent you a chain as well. How about a Max flow air cleaner to boot?

I run an 18" bar, oregon power match plus I think, top of the range anyway. 66 links in chain.

Before you send tell me how much chain costs as I'm running low.

For interest what sort of chain and how much for say 25' roll?

I would like the exhaust pointing away from the bar coz when I do my close to ground the current exhaust blows shit all over the chain and me. Just point it off to the left at a 45 degree angle and up at a 45 degree angle. That way it shouldn't burn your hands or the tree. I have attached diagram of what I mean from a saw I found on the net.

A screen, dont bother, I do mainly urban work.

I'm not a saw racer, I'm a tree worker. I do not want to compromise torque or bottom end power for RPM's. Often I stop a saw mid cut, clear crap outta the way and have to hit the throttle again to keep cutting, Stihls are good for that, Husky's prefer their higher rev range and dont respond quite as well IMO.

As far as the air cleaner goes I dont know, I like the current 3 levels of defence, the felt, the paper element then the foam. It gets pretty grubby I assure you, I would not feel comfortable with just foam.

Chain is 3/8's 050? Can do semi chisel or full chisel. What ever you prefer. As far as a 25' Roll goes, I have to think that shipping will cripple that deal.

I will begin working on the cover right after posting this.

Thanks,
Scott.

Well the first Wojo Muffler is on its way to Queensland, Australia. Should be ther in 5 - 10 days. Tomorrow, my first muffler to be shipped to Great Britain will be sent out.

Thanks for the opportunity Eric, I anticipate your Honest evaluation of the muffler. Seems very appropriate that you are the very first person in your country to get one of these mufflers.

With Great Esteem,
Scott.

At the end of the day the only true method of proving this for any saw would be a bench dyno test straight onto the crankshaft output.

Racing with timed cuts is BS frankly when it comes to measuring engine performance gains. People who do that must like to "crack a woody" or something coz they aint cracking facts.

Shush.

His first muffler is free...then when he wants more, he he he...worse than crack. Every tree guy that has bought one in the States has come back to get the rest of their saws done.
