Dear All We are offering the opportunity to advertise on the Android app developed by us at HowBig on behalf of Eric. The app combines the AS4970 calculations, the canopy surface and volume, and the Revised Burnley Method for tree valuation. The app will be freely available and will be placed on the Android Market so uptake and use should be good. We have opportunities to advertise on the app starting at £50 (sorry we are in the UK but we accept credit card payments through paypal). The advertising is targeted to the action parts of the app so always in the customers view and by arrangement so you wont be drowned out by Google Ads. For more details contact me by e-mail sales@how-big.co.uk Regards John Roberts |

Thanks for the enquires people have sent. I thought it would help if I summarise some of the response I have given. Regards John How does the advertising work? The scrolling adverts at the top of the app will be approximatley, 50 x 300 pixals. Approximately because it will vary slightly from handset to handset. The adverts will change every 3-4 secs. Each advert is a picture and a url can be embedded so that if the user clicks on an advert they go to a web site. If advertisers don't have a website we can set up a url on our website so that telephone numbers, email etc is show. So basically you buy time in the loop for your advert. The more you pay the more time slots you get, but you can to a certain extent pay for your position in a pecking order. How does the basic package still give me exposure? Because the system remembers to total time elapsed, the higher paying advertisers will sill run out of time. Also because the adverts are randomised there will come a time when your advert is at the top of the pile. If the avergae user spends only 2 mins in an app, twice a day. This still gives around 80 scrolls which means even a low end advertiser will have their add seen every 1.5 days. Can I guarantee my add will be seen everytime the app is used? The app can be sponsored, so you get an approximate 140 x 140 add on the splash screen as the app starts. These too will have url links. Is there a limit to the number of advertsiers? Yes, to be able to make the guarentees we have to limit the number of advertisers How long will the advertisments last for? Minimum is 6 months but you can pay for longer, and this guarentees transfer to any updates as well. What platforms will the apps work on? The current AS4970 app will be released on Andoird first and then Blackberry and then Windows7 Mobile, these will all be available before the end of the year. We hope to have an iPhone app available in the new year. Do you have apps for outside Australia? Yes, we have a whole range of apps for treecare and other uses. Eric As details become available I will post them here. We have a number that are at early stages development, so it would be inappropriate to discuss them at this stage but we do have an app for the THREATS risk assessment methodology developed by Juian Forbes Laird and widely used by many companies including Network Rail and The Environment Agency. This will be available for free in the next week or so on Android Market, we still have some advertising space left. We hope to have some screen shots in the next day or so. The plan is that all the apps we develop will be freely available wherever possible and developed at a reasonable cost. So if anyone out there has an idea contact me and we will see what we can do. I have been informed that Treeworld members will get a discount if they purchase advertising on this app. None of the revenue generated by this app goes back to me, that was the deal I done. I wanted to get this app out on the market functional and accurate at the lowest cost possible as I would be giving it away (free app). In return the developers can sell advertising space on the app to recoup their investment dollars. Readers, if you have concepts, ideas, formulas etc that you would like to see turned into apps then seriously, talk to this guy. I found Paypal easy to pay them with, their communication has been excellent keeping me informed all the way, and they are timely.

Robstar, I believe they already have an app that could help do this it provided information on how to choose an arborist, and then finds the nearest one to you listing their qualifications. You have to sign up to it and the app is freely distributed. I seem to remember the sign up fee is the equivalent of $50.

Attached are two screen shots of how adverts will look within the apps, the first is the 'Sponsors Splash Screen' which loads every time the app is opened. You can double the size of the advert if you wish (i.e. buy two spaces) and buy longer periods that 6 months. The second shows the 'Add Bar' which changes advert every 4 secs. These give a sense of the size and exposure from each advert placed. All the adverts (Sponsors Page and Add Bar will have a link to the advertisers chosen url (usually thier home page) though this can also be a special offers page or news page. Advertising programs start at £50, apps will be freely distributed and will have repetative use; so exposure to products and services in the adverts will be very good. The url below will download an .apk file for Tree Names. This is a simple Android app that when you choose a common name for a tree it gives you the scientific name. There are over 240 trees in it including over 100 trees found in Australia (if any of the name are wrong I'm sure you will let me know!) and we plan to keep adding to it from time to time. It also has a start up splash screen with links to web search engines when you are on the net, and also a rolling screen at the top of the main screen of the same links. These demonstrate how advert links can work in all our apps. If you have problems with your particular handset or ideas on which trees you would like next let me know at sales@how-big.co.uk To load the app you need to click on the link below in your phone's web browser and download the file to your phone. Then allow 'Unknown Sources' this is usually a checkbox in Applications Settings (remeber to uncheck it again after you have finished the install!). Or you can download the file onto your computer and transfer the file via the USB connection. And then follow the same procedure. The AS 4970 app is nearing completion and we should be finalising it later this week hopefully so there is probably up to Wednesday if anyone wants to post an advert on this app. We have developed Tree Names quite substantially go to the url below to download a copy, the best way to load it is to email it to yourself then open the e-mail with your phone. http://www.how-big.co.uk/home/jfl.ap...edirects=0&d=1 and it now has the following features. 1 The demo still has the same tree names in it. 2 You can get the latin names of them. 3 But you can also input any latin name into the text box. 4 And you can then do a specific search in a number of general and scientific search engines including PlantNET. 5. Not only that you can then search to see who supplies the tree in question. This last bit is very cleaver and you dont have to have a fancy data base just a list, preferably a pdf that you update regularly. We only have two Australian nurseries, and they are just ones we pulled off the net as examples of how it works. If you own a nursery or know someone who does. Then send them our way and we can put them on the searching list.Even if they are a small outfit and don not have a web site we have ways and means of getting them onto the searching lists, there will be an admin charge but it would be equivalent of around $120 for a year. this covers the 2 The app will give people direct access to your trees and they will be looking for specific species so it is very direct marketing. We can also accomodate people in the US and UK and if you are from another country there is no reason why we cant accomodate you also. Regards John sales@how-big.co.uk |

We are currently looking at how the various tree apps we have developed can be best drawn together and so we have developed a beta version of a tree surveying app for Android phones. It basically allows you to map and record tree positions and basic tree data. The app has been posted on Google Market under the name Cloud1 Survey it probably wont appear for a while yet but if it does I will post back. IT IS A BETA VERSION DO NOT EXPECT BELLS AND WHISTLES AT THIS STAGE Just thought I would point this out. It is free at the moment, we may have to charge a nominal fee in the future. The aim is to add all the other tools we are developing on to it so you have a tree work tool box. With regards to Cloud1 users we are looking into avoiding charging Cloud1 users but we need to look at support costs so no promises and ultimately it is not up to me but I am certainly behind not charging Cloud1 users. What it does at the moment is creates a map with labled points and a text file of tree data, so species, height, dbh etc that can be e-mailed, this means you can save it on your phone realy easily and send it realy easily. We have the capability to save the text file direct to SD but thought this was novel and wondered how people would take to it? There will be an update to Cloud1, not to the DEMO version though at this stage that will read the text file and create records including a google earth map of the points. That's about it give it a go and feed back. Regards John |

The FREE tree survey app has just been updated, you now have a text box as well as the drop down list to get a tree name. We have added a simple tool for Client Data Management. Please keep your comments coming and tell others about it. The latest update 1.3.2 was just posted so should be available sometime between now and tomorrow morning UK time. We still don't have any AUS or NZ trees on there yet but hope to sort this out this coming week. Regards John |

John, please elaborate on what this "cloud1" or others clouds are all about, some think it is to do with the weather. Seriously, what does it mean and how is a Cloud1 App different from just an App? Are there anymore Clouds on the horizon too, as in Cloud2 App etc?

Cloud1 Survey is a free tree survey Android app available at this link. https://market.android.com/details?i...JpZy50ZXN0MiJd It can map out trees and record simple details about the tree: species, height, DBH, but there is a text field for any notes as well. It also has a simple client management system where you can store name addresses telephone numbers and locations if they own several house for example. There are some neat litte tools in there, for example if you have coordinates or a postcode it will give you directions from your position to the site. Cloud1 Survey has been made simple so even if you are recording a few tree details for a quote (not a full risk assessment) then it is still a useful tool. The files details are output as a text file so you can use them in other documents, We have also put in place a business links button, you can request to have your business listed for a nominal, the fee (covers the time taken to put you in there). The listings are geographically registered how you would like them so if you want everyone in theworld to know yoou exist or just your town then this can be done, and you can have short (100 word descripition) telephone, email, web site and location. On Erics request there is a discount for Tree World Members. Cloud1 for Windows is windows software that allows you to not only do tree surveys but also build your own business and client database, you can build survey forms (for anything), add TPZ areas, risk zones, set up client data bases, set upwork shedules, create a work diary, auto-complete reports, and quotes; it also allows you to take the text file from Cloud1 Survey and turn it into a set of points in Google Earth so that you can print out the map and points. The full version of cloud1 also has full GIS capability so you can add maps from else where and accept mapping files from other systems etc. It currently retails at £200 but if you are interested we have some special Tree World offers for February, You can download a demo version (doesn't have quite all the features) which will run outon the 27 February at this link. http://www.how-big.co.uk/home/Cloud1...edirects=0&d=1 There is a light version of Cloud1, that does the mapping and surveying part and the work scheduling part but the diary and auto complete forms. But it still decodes the text file from the Android app into a map. There is currently a special offer to Tree World members and it is only £60 and includes one years software support. So basically it allows you to go out into the field with your phone get loads of tree data then come back to the office and print a map and the details you collected. sales@how-big.co.uk if you have any questions or to place orders Regards John |

The latest update of the Android App has been posted on Google Market, the bug has hopefully been fixed. There is a simple clinometer in the mapping part. No instructions just yet but see how you get on with it as is, and if it seems to work we will improve on it. Regards John |
