Me and Sean Freeman are still running a Stihl 090 (I saw his on Fav Saws). I had to look for receipts the other day (cause I had some saws stolen) and found the 090 receipt from the beginning of l980. Still runs like a dream.

bailey's sells an aftermarket kit to which you build your own070 or 090.Imagine you could buy that and have an 090 [taiwan of course]for around 500 bucks.they have some others but I forget the model numbers.
Chainsaws, Outdoor Power Equipment and Tree Care Supplies from Bailey's

When i get a big saw It'll be a 3120 but I considered an 090 about 2 years ago it needed a top end and a new carb.

The newest chainsaw I own was made in 1975, the oldest 1950. Smallest 77cc, largest 129cc.

How you doing Michael?

Ekka, I think they quit making that saw when they replaced it with the 088 quite a few years ago. It is the saw you see with the approx 8 foot bar on it in Baraneck s 150 foot up and still 7 feet in diameter poster. 8.22 cubic inches of displacement and I think about 140 in cc s.

Quintrex, did you have yours converted from 1/2 inch to 404? Have you broken any anti vibe mounts?

Mine was .404 when I bought it new. I had an 070 and a Lightning G (gear drive) before that in 1/2". Chain was hard to get. Also had a Danarm in 1/2".
never broke any anti vibe mounts. Only problem was the drive hub in the centre of the flywheel came loos. Tig welded it together again and no problems since.

Jerry sold his 090 earlier this year on ebay.It went for quite a few bucks.Oh btw the correct spelling is Beranek.

Well I bet that I might know a couple guys that walk up-right with their knuckles draggin' on the ground. Their OK, they probably have white knuckle so bad they wouldn't feel it.

My hats off to the folks who can run one of those big old buggers all day. And if I ever get to meet you guys, we'll go to a bar and I'll start a fight, sit back and watch you clean the place out.

If you got big wood to cut, HORSE POWER is the one thing you can never have to much of. And I just don't mean the saw.

They still make the 070 in Germany for some markets (certainly not the US), and I wouldn't be the least surpriced if they still make a few 090s as well.

Hands shakin'? Too much caffine or you thinkin' about the vibes? I have run the 7-29 and the 5-20 enough to get some idea what it might have been like to horse one around all day. The 5-20 sets up a pretty fierce buzz alright, part of which I suspect is the 9/16" full chisel chain. The 7-29 isn't all that bad, noticable but not numbing like the smaller saw. I have maybe a 100 hours running the much more modern XP1130, vibes were not an issue, horsepower wasn't either, that weird over-running bearing clutch starter was. Some (most) Homelites have less than ideal starters, the really old ones, like the 5-20s and such, have complicated cast brass, centrifugal ball bearing types. Blah, give me a McCulloch any day.

I do love my McCullochs, some of the best jobs I ever did were with them. The sound of a McCulloch is still ringing in my right ear, sometimes it's the 660, mostly it's a 797. While Mac noise is my favorite, other chainsaws sound great too, nothing matches the full on bellow of the big upright cylinder Homelites, then there is the Super 754 Remington, PowerBee Lancaster, old Pioneers, Mall 12, Titan 5200, SilverKing....all sing a different song.
I bought a Stihl 050, it was so quiet, that I thought there was something wrong with the muffler. That was the only Stihl I liked, I felt bad when it got crushed.
Before the younger crew gets worked up about the vibe and noise levels, remember that these chainsaws are from another age, they mirrored what was going on at the time, as do today's chainsaws. The automobiles from that age were big, heavy, solid things, with big low reving engines. Today we have smaller, lightly built cars, with small high reving engines, chainsaws followed suit. Comparing new equipment, against the old, doesn't make any sense, two completely different worlds.
