Chainsaw tragics, i had a thought the other day, "wouldn't it be great if you could watch a video of your Stihl saw being being stripped and rebuilt". That way someone could show you all the little "tricks of the trade", and it would make your maintenance so much easier. So over Easter i whipped up this video of me doing a "basic" strip/rebuild of an MS190/019t. Now by "basic" i mean, i didn't dismantle the power unit. My reasons for not stripping the engine are; - I'm to tight to spring for a new gasket set ![]() - If you know how to strip the engine yourself, than you won't need this vid. - If you are a DIY type, then i recommend you take the power unit to your dealer and let them install new pistons/bottom end etc... this will be easier and safer for you, plus you would have already saved money & time by stripping thus far yourself. - If you have stripped the saw and found the engine is wrecked, most of the time people just throw them out and buy a new saw. This video is just to show you the basics so you can clean, maintain and change minor parts easier. Anything i haven't shown you should be able work out yourself. If people find this helpful i will do other vids with the other saws i have. (but not for awhile, as this one took about 16 hrs of frigging filming, editing, uploading etc... )Anyway, vote in the poll for your favourite and i will do that one next. (No Newguy, i wont be doing any husqvarna vids) ![]() WARNING:- This video is for serious chainsaw tragics only, or those that have an 019t/MS190 and want to know how to strip it. Everybody else will find watching this video, is like watching paint dry. ![]() http://video.google.com.au/videoplay?docid=-5252374651781234318 or http://www.weareallabouttrees.com.au...ip-rebuild.wmv to watch it on your own viewer and download it to your PC. video is 24 minutes and 47Mb

Hi Simon, Good clip, There's a tool on the market that stops the piston...piston stop, it screws into the spark plug hole to stop the piston,This is a much better idea. It save's you running back to your dealer with egg on your face!![]() Hope this helps make your video more informing ![]() ![]() ![]()

| Maybe, maybe not, But what I do know you put up an instructional video of how to dismantle a saw using the the correct tools,The locking strip do break in the cylinder, Because of that I have piont this out. To complete your instructions, and maybe stop someone from getting caught.

Great video there Simon. I should pull our 019T off of the shelf give it a stripnrebuild and put her back into service now aye? From what me and my dad have heard from many tree blokes in our classes, those Stihl locking strips are cheap and nasty and like to break off into the cyclinder. We have a piston stop we use and it screws securely and firmly into the thread just like the spark plug but with a proud nose to stop that piston. The one point that I think is so crucial and almost always overlooked by the majority of the tree chainsaw blokes out there, is the chain brake and chain brake band. It wasn't taken into good detail in the video? Sometimes some grit and crap can get in behind the band and it wont grip the drive sprocket straight away (a few milliseconds to late of a severe kickback). Aswell as changing out the brake band for a new one and checking the Chain brake spring which activates the band. The chain brake band is a consumable part people that could possible save your life one day(excuse my french) le french tight asses...![]() Just some points to help ya out mate with the "chainsaw parts terminology" as I understand them, to make you future videos even better. What you called: Brake cover/brake cover assembly:= Drive sprocket Drive gear mechanism:= Worm gear Bearing over the crank inside the clutch hub: Needle cage Spark plug spanner/starhead allan key:= Stihl spline t wrench or scrench or stihl spline screwdriver Can't think of any more at the moment, but will keep you posted (when my bloody net speed goes back up next month[grr the video took me over the limit]) But overall mate, keep up the good work. These videos will be very valuable to alot of people... Perhaps some daily services and weekly and monthly service general videos would be good aswell?

I was refering to melted pistons or scored pistons, from engines of course.I've done it with great sucess mainly in do or die situations but its useful to know. Also if you remove head gaskets on bikes and such and apply a product called shelac it'll increase your compression.

![]() LOL The wife reckons if i make her film another chainsaw video, then i better get used to "polishing the piston". ![]() I made her film this one twice, the first time i was standing in too much shade and it didnt come out very well. You can imagine her joy when i told her i wanted to film it again.

| To be honest Bill i have only ever polished a 2stroke piston once. It was on an old dirt bike that i was patching up to sell. Most of the time they suffer such a catastrophic failure that you just chuck them out. I have polished a few 4stroke pistons though when doing rebuilds. I have only ever used fine emery cloth with a bit of kero or such. Probably make for pretty boring viewing. Thanks Scott

Playford, I'd imagine she could have helped you polish the piston in order to fully finish off the video's usefull effectiveness. However I can imagine that she'd rather not get involved. =) |

![]() ![]() You guys nag and nitpick more than my wife! I don't mind though, it helps me to provide better information. ![]() So i went out to the shed today and grabbed an old 020 piston & barrel. I have cut the barrel in half so you can see what's going on. So far you have presented annecdotal evidence. Allow me to present some empirical evidence! ![]() This is the correct placement for the tool, you would have to defy several laws of physics to cause it to break! ![]() This is an incorrect positioning of the tool which could cause failure! ![]() This is also an incorrect positioning of the tool which could cause failure! Hopefully these photos will help resolve any issues regarding the quality of the tool and it's correct usage. However in the event of the tool failing inside the bore, i recommend upending the engine and shaking it until the broken piece falls out. Regards Simon. "

Make sure you use some lubricant! (on your piston of course) ![]() You have to careful with the honing, i think in some of the dirt bike 2strokes they put a teflon? or chrome? coating on the bore. Not %100 sure though, might need to check that. But yes your right, sometimes you almost have to work miracles to get something going again. <><

like most blokes, i like to have a joke at the missus expense. Thankfully she is a "good sort" though and knows i'm full of "piss and wind". (I'd probably be laying in a gutter somewhere if it wasn't for her.) ![]() Cheers mate.

I was suprised how difficult it was to turn a mundane task into a instructional video. You have to do everything backwards (work to the camera) while trying to talk through every step, while remembering the correct sequence. Here's a little "Blooper" vid for your entertainment. ![]() WARNING:- conatins coarse langauge, not suitable for minors. Vid is 2min long and 5mb http://video.google.com.au/videoplay?docid=-4288171254853008526

Hi Folk's When you look at this tool there's really no possible way to misuse it. You simply screw it into the spark plug hole. So you now have the choice,It is now up to you.I now present to you for your consideration. The Piston Stop. ![]() ![]() ![]() All The Best and good luck JayD ![]() ![]()
