Default Trimming branches close to trunk

As a general rule of thumb for most trees and unwanted branches, how close should I be cutting to the trunk of the tree with a chainsaw. I have noticed on pepper trees in particular, that if I cut flush with the trunk, it eventually inverts somewhat (which is probably not good?). However, I have many other trees that have been Ok with a flush cut.

All branches under 4.5cm diameter should be cut with a handsaw as to prevent wounding the cambium layer around the cut ,

as for how close to cut etc my advice is to get a book on cutting techniques as there are many different ways to finish a cut depending on the direction and form of the branch where it leaves the the trunk.

happy pruning

Use the search button, search pruning, pruning cuts, codit, etc as there's lots of threads and documents .... flush cutting unless there's an internal collar is not on.

Look up and understand what a branch collar is. Do not disturb the collar tissue, as it removes the trees ability to properly heal itself over. Leaving openings for decay and invaders to

I did a two day pruning course at tafe that covered how to prune trees. For about $90 it was money well spent. Well worth it if you've got a horticultural tafe nearby.
