Default Stihl vs. Husqvarna

I need help, my stihl ms 440 magnum can't keep up to a husqvarna 372 xp. Both saws are stock, 20" bars. The husq eats the stihl. The husq is even as fast as a ms 460 mag. What can i do other than buy a husqvarna. I like my stihl, it just doesn't have enough power. Big bore kit, muffler mod??

Thanks
nick

How about a nitrous set up?Just kidding. The Husky 372xp has been around for a long time. It has the bore and stroke that allow it to wind up. Your saw is down on rpm but has the torque that that is needed to get the job done. I would live with it. When his Husky needs a top end, yours will still be chewing away.Ken

Both great saws. I think it comes down to type mufflers, carb tuning and chain IMHO.

You also can take 10 husky or stihl and 3 of them will be top dog runners, 3 will be dogs of the pack and 4 are your average running saws. Maybe you just got one end of one and one end of the other Or it is like I said in the first sentence.

Thats how nascar engine builders choose their motors, 3 go to race, 4 to use for practice engines, 3 get torn down and start over. So to speak, not exactly like that, but you get the idea.

There are several models of the 372xp out there. One is a 70.7cc (same as the 371xp, really), and the other is a 74.7cc. The larger of the two *should* beat your 440. Larger displacement, it is like a 460 rather than a 440 (and likely the one that he has). The smaller 372 has the same displacement as a 440.

Check the cold compression on your 440. If your saw is tired and the compression is under 145# I would pop in new rings. They are cheap. $12 on Ebay for new Caber rings can really wake up a tired saw. Also you can add a dual port muffler from a 460 to the 440 and make it into a real Magnum. Magnum on a 440 in the states was just the "Magnum" sticker on a regular 440; in Canada the Magnum had a factory dual port muffler. DP muffler and a carb tune will make a lot of difference. Maybe add 10-15% to your 440's power band. You could also put on a 440 BB kit that has the same displacement as a 460 (exactly the same). Or you could port it. But that is getting more involved than you have to.

If he has the 74.7cc 372xpw, you will be hard pressed to beat it. Chances are he knows that too. I have a modified 044 that I would put up against a stock 372xpw or MS460. DP muffler and lightly ported, and it screams. Actually I am spoiled by it. I much prefer my 044 to the 460 that I once had. Lighter, easier, and that thing runs like a raped ape. Its a wrapped R model with the large dual dogs and side cover, and the roller. Looks old and tired... heh heh heh.

Oh yah, 046/460 (fits the 044/440) factory dual port cover # 1128 140 0801 from Stihl. Pops right on, no other mods to the muffler needed. You will need to re-tune your carb at least a half turn richer to keep it burpling at WOT unloaded with the bar on it. I run my 044 at 14.5k RPM WOT. Light porting is just a cleaned up/wider intake and cleaned up/wider/polished exhaust port and a slightly lowered cylinder deck height to reduce the squish, and a slight camphored inner exhaust port to match the timing on the drop, and the transfers fanned out a bit. I have a similar 026 that was ported that way as well. Actually I had several of them, but they have a habit of selling themselves rather fast. Here, try this... "Hey, I want it!"
