Test run it, you can generally tell the difference when you feel the raw powaH of the 66.

Ok can someone tell me how to post pics here?. Also if it helps.... The air filter cover is cast metal and held with a threaded nut as opposed to the newer quarter turn style. Also it has the old style low profile oil and fuel fillers. Thanx again guys,Macgyver

Definately not a 044[poly filter cover]. You said low profile oil/ gas caps then its a 064.[pre1990]

When you are typing your message, click on the little icon of the paper clip just above the area where your text is being typed into.

From there you can browse your computer for the picture file, select it, and upload it. Just get that far and I'll embed the picture for you.

Yes take therrins advice and post a picture.
Yes after 1984 Stihl had installed side chain tensioners on their pro saws from 024 up.
If the saw is all original, has a metal air filter cover and "low profile" oil/gas caps, then it has to be a 064. These caps are sloped in on the sides [wide at base narrower at top], there is fine ridges on the sides , single screwdriver slot on top.

Yep Stihl 064AV. I have one just like it [one of the first year ones]. Mine is the first year 1986-1987. 85cc, 14.1 lbs [as light as the 460]. Then Stihl fattened them up a few years later after the sales kicked in.
One of my favorite Stihls.
Make sure you replace the missing chain brake lever Macgyver, that saw is very much capable of producing some severe kickback energy.
Willard.

Thanx Therrin for the pic help, And Holmen for the ID. I need to get the clutch and want to get the air filter cover as well as the top cover. Will the newer style 1/4 turn air filter lit fit this saw? I need not only the brake handle but the complete brake as well. Any other saws cover interchange here? I have had this saw in mothballs for 10 years was given to me with a hole in the fuel tank as well as a complete new take which I put on it 10 years ago and then for got about the poor girl. She fires right up though so its all good. cant complain as there is no better saw then a Stihl and still better a free Stihl. What bar/sprocket chain setup are you running on her Holmen? Thanx for the help guys!

Some parts from the earlier 066 will fit your earlier 064, but I'm afraid you'll have to either find a parts saw just like yours or order new parts.
My 064 in the 2 photos I have here, I heavily modded it 20 years ago for competition in timbersports. Notice the Stihl 084 carb on it? That's just a sample of mods I have done to it. [man the hours it took me to make that carb fit]. I also did major porting mods and installed a full circle journal crankshaft.I didn't bother with a detachable head because I wanted to keep it looking stock. Depending on the size of log at the competion and if I'm running a tune pipe or not, I use either a 9, 10 or 11 pin 3/8" sprocket on it.
