I'm looking at a year-old MS390 (1) owner. STIHL MS 390 WITH A 20" BAR AND IT ALSO COMES WITH A 20" & 25" BARs, SAFETY CHAPS, CARRYING CASE AND IT COMES WITH 3 25" CHAINS. It is still under the 2 year warranty. Price is $450. Deal or no deal?

With an 18" bar that saw retails brand new around here for $469.00. With the extras it might be a good deal depending on how much use it got in one year.

the saw retails for $489 around here. but the warranty is only 1 yr., not 2 yrs. the chaps are a $60-100 new, depending on brand etc... the case is ~$40. the bars are ~$40-60, depending on brand and type. the chains are ~$25-40 depending on brand. if all of the extras are stihl products and are in good condition, then i would go for it. with a muffler mod that saw will be pushing 5hp.

Seems high to me. You can get a near-new 361 for that price or less around here. The case is not that big a deal (I rarely use any of mine), but the bars are the right size. If they are Stihl ES bars they are the good ones. If they are only Stihl E type? Not so great. Off brand like Forester, Chicom junk. Chaps are nice, but I would get the best saw you can first, rather then going for the add-on stuff. One thing to note about the 390 and all the series of 1127 saws: they are clam shell case designs. Pulling the engines and doing port mods and the like are far more difficult (if not impossible) compared with the pro 260/360/361 saws. I ran a 290 for years, and loved it. They do the job. But if you are going to use the saw hard and want to be able to do top end engine work on it, the pro saws are much better. Over time I have swapped all my non-pro Stihls out with pro ones. I am selling my 025s now that I have another good 026. I paid $180 for a clean 026 with the clear gas tank and the tunable carb. Its the non "PRO" model, but it is a pro chainsaw, and a dependable design that is easy to work on. Another thing to note is the AV on the 390. They are buzzy saws. Your hands will fell it after a few hours of use. The 361 has far better AV on it (spring mounted chassis). |
