Hello folks, I'm new so please don't beat me up ! I have an Stihl MS 290 which is about a month old with about 3 hours of run time. everytime I run the saw the bar oiler doesn't want to work all the time. after I take the bar off and run the saw, VERY little oil comes out of the top hole, and NO oil comes out of the silver"Button" which has the poppet valve in it. I clean out both with a q tip, it oils for a short time, then stops. can someone help? Thank |

On the bottom of the chain saw, is there a hole in the bottom of it, where you can place a screw driver in, or not? If you can, look at the diagram of on the bottom of the chain saw, and you will see an how to turn the screw in the for the oilier to increase, or decrease the flow of oil. Turn it all the way, that shows you how to increase the flow of oil. Also, is the oil port of the bar clean? If it is plugged, no oil will be able to pass through. Have a look, and see what happens. Bruce.

Ye I'm with Bruce on this one. Also I've seen saws with sawdust in the bar oil tank. Blocks things up pretty quickly. Don't know what you'd use to clean out the bar oil tank. My guess is empty it out and swish it with petrol, clean the valve out, let the petrol evaporate fully then replace the bar oil. The other possibility is contaminants in your oil. Not likely, but worth a check. |

Something else to look for. I just remembered that I heard of this happening, one other time. The aluminium foil of the the top bar oil jug, under the cap, fell into a tank of a chain saw another persons chain saw. He took it to the dealer, and they replaced the pump, same thing was happening, oilier not working right. Turned out that the foil fell from the oil jug, into the oil tank, and covered up the outlet, inside the oil tank of the chain saw. Check to make sure that this has not happened. Bruce.

I triple rinsed the fuel tank, using Varsol. Reason for the triple rinse, was to make sure that everything was washed out of the tank. We have to do that to make sure the jugs don't have anything in them, to make sure that they are emptied properly for disposal. We rinse out the jugs for herbicides and pesticides, while spraying the crops in the fields. Bruce.

A real easy way to clean the oil port and tank is to empty the oil and this is importantDO NOT replace the cap,if you do your gonna get spray, instead hang the saw over an oil pan,get some carb cleaner and spray through the oil outlet and into the tank,if its clooged the pressure will clear it out, just like back feeding a fuel filter to clean it,all the junk in the tank will come out of the hole where the cap should be while doing so,also check your worm gear,i've seen a few saws where it was partially stripped and it cause little to no oil.

Well I emptied and cleaned out the oil tank. I found VERY little, two tiny slivers of saw dust. rinsed out the tank with gasoline, blew clean compressed air from the oil port back to the tank, I blew air into the poppet valve which I assume is the vent, but nothing worked. I have a VERY small amount of oil coming through. I also turned the oil pump relief valve full open. Not sure where to go from here.

Newguy18 suggested that it may be the worm gear. This may be a repair shop issue. If it's a good saw, it's worth finding the problem!

Have you pulled the clutch hub? Is there a wire, or arm going from the pump over to the notch in the clutch hub, so that the clutch hub operates the oilier? If there is, it is possible that the wire, or arm got bent away from the notch in the clutch hub, and it is not engaging properly. Something else to look at, for a possibility. If there is no wire, or arm, your going to have to take it to the dealer, to have them look at it. Bruce.

Its most likely the worm gear, pulling the clutch is not hard, you can buy the piston stop if you want to but either way you take a hammer and a small punch and give the clutch a smart tap going clockwise,2 or 3 more taps and it should spin od,then you can remove the 2 screws holding the oil pump down and under the pump case is the worm gear.

Heres what I found!! I pulled the clutch, found the worm gear and punp working fine, so I disassembled the "Clunk" in the oil tank. I found the little black plastic screen was not opened at the factory. where there is supposed to be small hole to filter out the debris, the hole still had plastic flashing in them. I removed the screen and everything oils fine and now runs like a champ!! thanks for all the help!!!!!!!! |
