I removed all my aluminum chain catchers on my 660's an 440's and replaced them all with the roller type that goes between the dawgs. My 36'' chains have came nowhere near my arm when it derails now, and also Im not replacing clutch covers . Nothin funner than a 36'' RSF chain shavin the hair of ur forearm when the chain pops at full throttle . How does everyone else like these roller catchers if you're using them?

Yeah the roller ones are the way to go ... but I rarely get a derailment. You tend to get lots of derailments when cutting through multi-leadered crap in one hit with a loose chain.

I' ve been cutting quite a feww big oak trunks up that are loaded with vines and crap ,they get pulled in and derail fairly often. I also tightened the chain thinking it was too loose. But even with the chain "too tight" , theres enough bar length to still allow the chain to be pulled off track. I only have this problem with my 36'' bars, and it has happened about three times this year.

What type bar are you running. Sounds like your rails have opened up some. I run a Oregon ultra-lite bar and haven't had any problem with it coming off. I have been cutting alot of trees covered with all kinds of vines. |

Us Aussies run 0.063" guage mainly, that's std Stihl. Most Huskys run 0.058" but 0.050" for a saw that size with so many links???????? I just dont get it why you yanks do that.

They love to cut fast. ![]() We used to use 050 cutting Iron Bark stepping stones, [2 inch rings] smaller cut, more money & faster. Not for everyday treework, here anyway. |

What does the Face of the Bar Cover, that meets the Bar, look like. I had that problem with my 024, and I had to resurface the Face of the Clutch Cover. It had a high groove worn into the Face of the Clutch Cover, from the Guide Bar, and once I leveled the Groove, I had no trouble like that again. ![]() Bruce.

The bars are new , most saws bought from Stihl dealers around Ohio at least, come with .050 gauge. They NEVER stock .063, if they did I probably would stay with that. So , availability is very important to me. I have never used a .063 gauge on a 36'' or longer bar. Are they better? , and are they a bit slower? I use huskies when I'm in the air and cutting horizontally, the .058 seems to stay more "level" in the bars groove IMO.

But still, what does your Face of the Bar Cover look like. Is there a High Ridge around the Mounting Bolts, and where the Slot of the Guide Bar for the Mounting Bolts fit into the Guide Bar. If there is a High Spot in that area, it will allow your Guide Bar to come Loose, and throw your Chain. I had that happen, a few times in less than an Hour, until I discovered that the Face Plate had a High Spot in the area I just described to you. Once I resurfaced the Face of the Clutch Cover, I didn't have that trouble again. Bruce.
