Default Stihl 660

Hi All, Finally ive saved enough pennies to get a new Stihl 660. Im planning on buying it the next week or two. I was just wondering if anyone knows if there is any news about these saws ie a newer model being released in the next couple of months etc. PS, Im in NSW, Australia so i would be interested in hearing if there are diffeneces between areas ie different carbies etc

Not yet, I was just waiting to see if you guys said anything. I have been looking for about a month now. Ill probably order it today.

The local Stihl guys gave me a 441, 460 and 660 for a week to try out. Jeez it feels like it has some power compared to my next largest saw which is a Husqy 575. Its real surprising as it feels like it weighs about the same as the husky 575. Maybe marginally heavier but has a whole lot more mumbo.

As god is my witness ill never use anything but a Stihl again.

Ended up opting for a 25" bar with 3/8 chain and its a brilliant combination

I have a feeling this I already know what the answer will be but, is there enough of a power difference between the 660 and the 460 to justify the extra 2 lbs of weight?

I have found a Small Engine Repair Shop, not too far away from my Place, and I found an 066, that needed a Piston, and Cylinder. I was able to get it for a Friend of mine, for around $150.00. He got the Jug, and Piston for it. He Normally runs
044's, and once he got the 066 put together with the New parts, he said in Comparison, the 066 could out cut the 044's 1 1/2 Blocks of Fire Wood faster than the 044's could. Hope this Helps. Bruce.

Originally i was looking at the 460 and the 660. I tried both for a week. The difference in weight is a little noticable but using them on a something like a turpentine tree it makes a huge amount of diffence with the power available. Makes the job a lot easier/enjoyable thats for sure

I just bought one about a month ago (660)and I think I paid around 1400.00. Is this a currency difference? I noticed all the new Stihl chainsaws have a lot more plastic and less metal. However one advantage is that the handle can be replaced without the whole gas take assembly being replaced which is a big advantage on the climbing saws.

Seems like the "more plastic less metal" would be:

Lighter weight
Cheaper parts to replace
Less prone to rust
Isnt as cold when you're holding onto it
....uhoh, I'm running out here. Doesn't...conduct...electricity as well? Doh!

Check out the 650. I have a 650 and a 660. I honestly cannot tell the difference in power. The 650 is alot cheaper than the 660

Is the 650 a "professional graded use saw"??

There's gotta be SOME reason for the price difference.

yeah i just got back from the shop.

6cc's less which is a .4 kW difference. And it's only rated for up to a 28" bar.
(well, rated by "them")

It's only like a hundred bucks cheaper. I'd just go for the 660 if it came down to the difference of just a hundred bucks.

The 650 will probably last longer then the 660 and save you alot of trips to the gas can.
I bought my Stihl 066 Mag Artic[heated carb] back when they first came out in 1992-93. Almost 17 years later it still hasn't given me a bit of trouble. Never had the cylinder off, just the odd carb rebuild, sparkplug, starter rope and drive sprocket. Mind you I don't use it every day and arborist work is not like 8 hour a day logging, but this saw is the most reliable I have owned next to my Stihl 090AV.

Didnt you just start like, 2 days ago? LoL

Holmen, if the 660 is so good, and you havent had any trouble with it in 17 years (okay so its an 066), why would you suggest the 650 over it???

The 650 and 660 are basically indentical saws with the 660 having a larger piston. Having said that, the 650 with a smaller displacement and everything else the same as the 660 you will have a saw burning less fuel overall and putting less stress on the crankshaft and bearings, making it more durable and fuel efficent. Also don't forget the time saved with less refueling.
I know good chainsaw operators in timbersports or even just logging who are on top of the game as being expert sawchain filers and can easily out cut someone running a 660 with only a 440.
Now we can't compare my 17 year old 066 to something else. I work my saws hard but I am meticulous in saw maintenance and filing. You won't find a blue colored guide bar on any of my saws. Also I have heard conflicting reports of the 660s not being up to par in quality versus the older 066s.

A little over a year ago along with a couple of other saws I had a 064 stolen. When I had it I did not consider buying a 66/660 as I assumed they were very similar. Thieves wouldn't know it but they did me a big favor. Got a good ins. settlement and bought the 660. I am hugely impressed with this saw especially in its feel compared to the 64 I had.

Love to take it up in the tree. Feels like a ms200 compared to my 880. Don't know anything about the 650 but I am always going for more power if given the choice in a similar weight/price/power class.

Its a little smaller than the 660,but it seems a tad lighter,it won't kill you running it all day, seems like a pretty good saw.

I run a 36'' bar on my 650 , with a full skip RSF chisel chain. It never dogs out and wouldn't have any doubts about putting a longer bar on it.

Do you keep a 36 full time on it. I would think that would limit use of it.

No , normally I run a 28'' on the 650 and a 36'' full time on the 660. But honestly, I cannot tell the difference between the two. IMO , the differences may only be apparent on bars longer than 36''. I will never buy another 660, I cannot justify the extra money over the 650

Thats way to much saw for a 20'' bar. I'd use the 361 for 20'' bars. The block is magnesium and lighter than the models above and below the 361. The 650 and the 660 WILL break you downafter a while, guaranteed.
