My brother gave me a Stihl 044 chainsaw. After some effort got it running but the chain brake stays engaged until I manually pull it towards the handle. As soon as I let go it moves forward and engages the brake. Any clue as to what the problem might be? Thanks.

its a bit flogged, time for new chain brake. one of mine is like this just not as bad, acts like a touchy inertia brake now, which i can live with for the time being. Yours by the sound of it is worse and should be replaced, if it is making using the saw more difficult, hence dangerous.
