Hi all, I am using a Stihl 038. It runs find when logging on teh flat. Bus as soon as i try to fell with it, its starts to die. Turn it back upright again and revs go back up. I have cleaned the carb, but I think that there may be a problem with either the fuel filter in the tank or somewhere between the carb and cylinder. All advice welcomed. Regards Tom P.s. for anyone worried about the rain. Im Irish and it rarely stops raining, irish sunshine. |

Is it the same whichever side it's turned on? Have you tried adjusting the air/fuel screws? Does it rev up then die, or does it just slowly idle down then die? If it revs up or screams then dies it's sucking air in from somewhere.

Same both sides. I think that it may be sucking air, but i dont want to start messing with carbs n pipes. Its a pretty old 038, the old screw in petrol and oil caps. The rubber pipes in it might be rotten. It was running high and then dying off, once I cleaned the filters and adjusted idle and hi speed this solved itself. Very powerful upright. Thanks TOm |

Could the fuel pickup hose inside the fuel tank have gotten stiff to the point that it doesn't flop around like a pendulum anymore? Does it work properly if the tank is completely full to the brim? I'm not even sure if your saw works like the ones I'm used to, but it seems like a logical thing to check. |

its sucking air, probabley a pinhole in the fuel line, could also be the carb's base gasket,or a vacuum line, worst case scenario its a crankseal but not likely.I'd start by changing the gas line and making sure the carb was seated tightly to its gasket.

I think that its the fuel line, a few of the guys reckon that its sucking air or else the line in the tank. I have take the safest step, and booked it with a guy that fixes saws professionally. At lease I wont be able to make a shambles of the carb and bits. On a different note, is it possible to weld or braise the cast that hold the head of a pole hedge cutter? Many thanks for the replies. Regards Tom |

It might be possible, you have to be a pretty good welder & have the right rods. A mate of mine could do it but travel expenses may be a problem, ![]() There maybe another way, what brand is it? |

I bet it's the fuel hose, I rebuilt a stihl TS400 recently that had exactly those symptoms, started fine idled perfect, rev it and it would just die off. Replaced the hose and it was perfect. Where in Ireland are you Tom? |

Its the fuel hose, have sent it to a guy that repairs saw professionally, getting him to service everything on it. Based in Carlow, about 20k south of Carlow town in the south east. The local village is in the news at the minute, big travellers fair on there tomorrow, and it appears that a travellers family feud is going to be sorted out. Drafted in loads of police, be an interesting few days for what is normally a tiny sleepy village of a few hundred people. Regards |

Sound, what part of Cork? Looks very busy in Borris today, big crowd from early morning. Going down later to see if there are any bargains, you never know what you might see!
