Had a good day, traded my 029 for a 390XP Husky, and got an 034 for a project saw. The 034 is very good mechanically, it has some plastic damage and a bit broken off the chain cover. The tank repair does not leak, but the raised lip to seal the fuel cap has been filed down on bottom and allows fuel to seep out. There is a split in bottom of handle which will be an easy fix. Best bet would be a replacement tank assembly if I can find one, and a chain cover also. My question here is, how old is it? |

I just saw this one close to me, http://cgi.ebay.com.au/STIHL-CHAINSAW-034AV-NOT-COMPLETE-/190524668496?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_15&hash=item2c5c27ba50 034's always sell for a good price, that's an AVS even better. Not too many around, it would be a good parts saw but end up going for a good price. About late 80's I think. I've got a couple, good saws. |

I bought my 034 brand new when they first came out in 1984, was a great little saw for cutting pulpwood and the side chain tensioner was very advanced for the time when no other company had it. The 034 super which came out a short time later was a big improvement going from 56cc to 61cc. But still didn't have the cutting speed of the 61cc Husqvarna 162 or Jonsered 630. The 034's big brother the 064 at 85cc and 14.1 lbs was my favourite saw at the time when I bought it in the fall of 1986. Willard. |

Thanks for information, I appreciate the help. I did see the eBay 034 and am watching it to see how it goes for price. Are there any other models the tank assembly and side cover are common to? Other than 036 that is. I have an 064 which is in great condition, love using it with the 3 foot bar. It can be a mongrel to start at times, it has no decomp. |

I have found a reference that says the following models all have the same clutch cover. I tried my 064 cover on the 034 and it does fit. Gives more choice for replacement. 024 026 028 029 034 036 038 039 044 046 064 066 |

I have two 034's, that I have brought both back to life. Great working chain saws, and very nice to work with. Bruce.

I have tried it out, it runs very well. Now have a parts saw that has a badly scored piston and bore, and coil and clutch are missing. All plastics are good and clutch cover is metal one in good nick, so set to make a start on restore. I thought I saw somewhere that the Digital Ignition sticker on air filter cover was available. Local Stihl dealer says they are not. Any ideas where one could be obtained? Cheers All Nev Photo of spare with cleanup started. Rubber carby tube was perished, maybe it blew piston running lean |

I am looking at getting my spare parts 034 going as well as the project one, as it is well worth keeping alive. Is there any problems or modification required if I get a 48mm bore 034 Super/036 cylinder kit for it? It has a 46mm bore. The parts saw has a 2 piece plastic clutch side cover, whereas the other has a 1 piece cover. Which is the later saw? What muffler mod would you recommend? I would like to change direction of gas flow away from main body as it get so crappy and hard to keep clean. If I do this then a performance mod may be done at this time. |

I modified my muffler's, for my 034. I have one left to do, so I'll post pictures, if you would like, on how I done mine. Bruce.

| Yes, the muffler modification, made a huge difference, both in power, and revs. One thing to be very carefully of, is that you don't run your chain saw too lean, otherwise, you will seize your engine. I did that, by trial, and error. Bruce.

Found another 034 with no compression at all. Had trouble getting oil pump for spare 034 as it is an early version without oil control screw. Later type oil pump will not fit in housing without cutting a slot for it. This would be right on a strength casting. So have repaired original pump. It had been run dry and froze the shaft. Some 2000 grit wet and dry around a dowel and a bit of patience fixed it. Will have 2 very good saws out of this. |

I like using my 034. It's a pretty much all around purpose chain saw. I use mine from 4" limbs, up to about 12", to 14" stuff, while I'm cutting fire wood. Then I use my 044, for the rest of the tree, or tree top, over the 14" diameter.

Alright, just new to the forum and I too have just aquired a 034. I did have to pay through the nose for it....(wait)...$45.00. It was in bit's and pieces in a box all i was told it was well worn and something had come loose in it. The loose thing was one of the bolts in the muffler had come out. At the weekend i thought i would try to put it back together again and try to get her started. Some fresh fuel, cleaned the plug and air filter and she started . The only real thing i need for it is a fuel tank as the handle were the carbie links is broken and the rods come loose and some small things that are easly got from stihl and new bar and chain. Dose any one have a good recomendation for the size of bar, chiseled or semi. This wee saw seems to have plenty of power even though the piston is scored to buggery which will be getting replaced soon for a 036 cylinder and piston, which comes to the question were would be the best place to get one as the prices vairy alot from $70-$250 in the states. cause i got quoted from stihl in rockingham, perth $260 for a piston assy and over $400 for the fuel tank and handle assy .Cheers Gavin |

Washed with hot water and dish washing detergent to remove grease film, used scrub bud for hard bits. Then cleaned with polish for head light protectors to get yellowing off. Not sure what product to use to put a shine on it though. (What did you use) I found Mequires Tyre Gel puts a good protective coat on already shiny surfaces, water beads off and fuel/oil does not stick making cleaning easy. | |

NEVC-look up "chainsawr". It's a site dedicated to used parts for all saw brands, models. you can prob save some $$$ by going there if you're not wanting to buy new parts for it. You can search by brand, model and part.

Have found that site, it is very good, thanks for mention. Question, which is better carby, Zama or Tillotson? Not sure which to use on rebuild. |

I have 2 034's, when I cut fire wood. I get them both ready to go, at the same time, When one runs out of gas, or the chain gets dull, I just grab the next chain saw, and keep cutting, and worry about fueling, or swapping the chain out, later. I do that with my 044's as well. Saves time, and getting more fire wood cut. Bruce.

Cheers for that Bruce! will get around to it in the next couple of days. There dosen't seem to be alot around on these saw but what i have read they seem to rave about it. Im gonna try getting a 18/20 inch bar and a semi chisel chain as i mostly cut felled jarrah as it will be a fire wood saw for the winters. I do own a 50cc mac with a 20inch bar and it seems to drag but some of the wood is over 20 in diamiter. Dose the 036 head make alot of differecnce or would i just be as well sticking with the 034?. Sorry for the questions and hacking into the thread. Cheers Gav |

I'm not 100% sure, if you can put a 036, cylinder, on a 034, or not. If it was me, I'd stick to the 034. You do a muffler mod, on it, you will be more than happy with it. Should do well, with a 20" bar, and semi chisel chain. I run mostly semi chisel chains here when I cut fire wood, but I do run chisel chains, that came with the chain saws, in my signature. All the Stihl chain saws, that I have where non runners, except 1, a couple needed P&C kits, my 084, was built out of parts saws, and the rest just needed a good clean up, and carburetor kits. Bruce.

Just gone through checking if 036 barrel fits an 034. It seems one cooling fin needs a trim as it is too close to plastic, and muffler needs a washer behind it where it bolts to main body of saw. Not sure if 034 Super cylinder needs these mods. I am finding differences on 034 models, I assume as they improve with newer models. Bruce, any muffler mod photos yet? |

Cheers Nev i have been looking at the handle on flee bay, good price but it's a copy. I know chinese copys are almost as good as the originals and if not better, about the cylinder as far as i know most of them have to have one of the cooling fins trimmed and possibaly req's an additional head gasket so there is a 1.5mm gap between the mating faces. About the mufflers mods, is it just a case of opening up the baffle plate inside of it, or making a couple of 10mm hole on the outer face. Hopfully if i don't get to many call out at the weekend i will be able to give it a propper clean and a good inspection of the head as i might be able to give it a light sanding and get a couple of new piston rings to get me by. will try to get some photos up of the saw over the weekend. Cheers Gavin |

Gavin, Have not heard of 2 head gaskets and 1.5 mm gap before. From what I have here it would take more than 2 gaskets to space to 1.5mm, and wouldn't that lower compression too much? Bruce is the muffler mod man, waiting on pics of his mod to see what he does do. I have found 2nd hand tanks and all have been $100 and more, so thought that reproduction a good alternative unless originality is required. I would use it to make a cheap saw out of bits if there was a need for one that is. And doing this would at least keep bits that would otherwise sit on the shelf back in use. Cheers Nev |

Hi it's just what i have picked up but i could be wrong about the cylinder head, was looking at balieys tonight and they are doing the cylinder kits from $70 to $300. Will more than likely end up getting the handle off of ebay as second had one's seem very hard to come by here in Perth or anywere else for that matter cause they seem to be keeper and hold a good price second hand. Cheers Gavin |
