Got the cylinder head off today, and it was a bit of a mess. The piston was all scored and dinged, cylinder head wasn't to bad. Spend a good 1.1/2H with the oil and emery paper to remove the groves the best i could and cleaned up the exahust port which removed almost 2mm of carbon deposits. there was very little play in the crank shaft. All in all not to bad for an old saw. So will get my self a piston kit and a new tank and handle assy and see what happend from there

Cheers Gav

A friend recommended this eBay seller, my item 150562625347

My barrel was too badly grooved to hold compression , piston was not as bad as yours though.

I went to balieys online and got a quote for postage on 6 items including a piston kit for $40 and the cost of the complete order is $110 so i think i will be placing it this week. I was quite suprised with the pricing of all the gear

Cheers Gavin

This is the spare parts saw shown in post 8 in bits. It now has a 036 barrel/piston kit, carby done, oil pump and clutch done plus general cleaning and checking.
Runs very well, not cut as yet as new chain needed.

Thanks Rogue60, I have appreciated what you did a lot more after this rebuild.

Next one I will use 2 pak paint I think, and get the colour matched. I used Heron from Super Cheep this time.

Nice job on the saw, was wondering how you got the bit below the muffler so clean. Have to admit when i get my one up and running it will never look that nice. will you be putting the saw to work?

Gavin, I painted the case when it was stripped down.
It will be a worker though. It will be great to use a saw I got going again.

The muffler is rust killer that turns metal black. Have used that on tractor mufflers and it stands up to heat ok

Nice job on the resto looks great!!

Sorry if I missed it in your post, just wondering what paint you used? I was thinking of trying Krylon's rattle can stuff they make special for plastic but I figure any fuel spills would wipe it out real quick.

I've got a 034 setting in the shed that I need to go thru myself. I bought a 036 pro cover and Ive got a 036 pro cylinder I plan on using on the saw. Just need to get a piston and I can start working it over. Hope mine turns out as nice as yours did. you have made one very good looking saw there and should be proud of the fine work you have done. Rick!

YEAY, finally got the saw built today, well a mock build as there has been a mess up with the piston and this is what she looks like and im liking it. Can't wait to get her started. Not bad for $45 saw and a couple of hundred spent on parts

Yeah she's good, cut a couple of tonne with it so far, for a 50ccish saw im supprised about the power. the biggest i have cut so far has been about 24 inch in hardwood and it just supprises me hopw well it coped. I have an equivelent sized mac and that struggled. So well impressed. I also got the handle from ebay for $60 and yet to fit it but it seems to be goosd quallity Item no 280677625860.

Ive cut about 4 metres of wood with mine now, and have to agree that these are really good saws for the cc size.

[QUOTE=NevC;110763]Gavin,
Hi there,
im new to this technology so pardon me.....

My 22yr old 034 im told by the local sthil bloke is tired and needs rings? and more ($300.00+) as it keeps flooding and im tired of getting ripped off!
Runs fine without air filter but........
I dont want to spend a lot but i cut up 15-20 mtrs of hardwood ( blackwwod / messmates etc) for firewood here per year.
Any suggestions appreciated

Ross

alright,
you can pick up a complete head and piston kit from bailleys online or ebay for $100-300. as it's flooding as well it might be a carbie problem, agian these are relitivly cheap and a complete gasket kit wouldn't go a miss. the piston was a pain to get in. I used loads of oil and a cable tie to hold the rings in place while i slipped the piston in.

Hope it goes well

Gavin

The cheap barrel kits may have a poor combustion chamber casting making it a lower compression fix. The saw will run OK, but just be aware of this.
You can get plastic ring compressor kits of eBay very cheap, well worth getting.
