Default stihl 028 chainsaw point setting

Does anyone know how you can set the points on a Stihl 028 woodboss chainsaw without the use of the special adjusting cam tool that the stihl dealer says you have to have or know where I can purchase this tool. Stihl part No. for this tool is 11188930500.

All you need is a feller gauge set. Turn the crank shaft till you see the gap of the points open up, place a 0.014" to 0.016" feeler blade into the gap, loosen the points, and adjust the points to that gap of the feeler gauge blade.
When you put the flywheel back on, the gap between the magneto coil, and the magnets of the flywheel, should be between 0.008" to 0.012" Point to remember though, the blade of the feeler gage must cover both posts of the coil, and then adjust the coil so that the two points are tight against the flywheel, with the blade of the feeler gauge between the both, and tighten the hold down bolts for the coil, turn the flywheel, so you will be able to put the blade of the feller gauge out, without the magnets holding everything tight.
If you have any more questions, don't hesitate to ask. Bruce.

You can change to electonic buy replacing the coil. Then you dont have to mess with points

When ever I have issues with points and condenser, I toss them, and put in an ignition module. It is like a computer chip, that takes the place of the points and condensers. Thew cost around $12.00 to $16.00 each. Bruce.

Hi Wayne.
Have you checked to make sure that you have the wires in the right place on the module. The Positive wire has to go to where the old wire from the points hooks up to the magneto, and make sure that you have a good ground.
Also did you happen to pull the flywheel. If not, the key for the crank shaft, and fly wheel could be sheared off, and throw everything out of whack.
If you had pulled the flywheel, you could have not gotten it torque3d down right, and it could be loose. Your flywheel should be torqued down around 24 foot pounds.
If you still have any more troubles, let me know, and I'll help you the best that I can.
Another thing to do, is to completely remove the points and condenser, and anchor the ignition module underneath the flywheel. Also check to see if the flywheel hasn't rubbed any of the coating from the wire of the ignition module. It could be shorting out and causing you a problem too. I had that happen a couple of times. Bruce.

I had a 028 wood boss with points. that i put a new solid state coil into it. what you can do is replace the old coil with a new Elctrictroinc coil to get rid of the point all together.

I would check to make sure you have a good coil first. before replacing the module again.

I had a coil they would run till warm, then break up and never restart till it was cooled off again. This could go from seconds till about 25 mins each time after first run.
