Default Sprocket sizes and faster chain speed

Whats better for cutting. Chain speedmor torque? Is a seven tooth sproket going to be better on a stihl 046 (with 25 inch bar)than and 8 tooth?

That depends on what you are cutting and type of chain too.

Cutting softer wood, pines and maybe poplar etc it would be OK but cutting say oak, our ironbark (eucalyptus sp) etc it wouldn't be as good.

I only run a 22" bar on my 046 with a 7 tooth drive, I run 25" bar with 8 tooth on 066 though, but those saws generally cut eucs.

What's the difference, between the 7 and 8 tooth sprocket, and what is the advantage between them? Bruce.

Like a bike imagine that the gearing at the pedal crank gets larger ... you go faster but have to push harder.

So the chain runs slightly faster with a 8 tooth than a 7

One other thing to watch is often you'll need an extra link in the chain, like on my 66 for 25" bar I need 85 links not 84

I use 8 pin sprocket on both my 441 with a 18'' and 660 with a 25'' in green soft wood because i am looking for speed and have plenty of grunt with them saws.

Question, Does the 8 pin sprocket fit on the drum, or do you have to replace the drum as well? Since I joined this website, I have noticed a lot of guys talking about them, and is the first that I have heard about them. Thanks again for the advice. Bruce.

Just change the sprockets, but some times you may need to add or take out a chain link to make things work.
This is on the Stihl saws with a RIM sprocket ( not drum and sprocket as one unit).

That depends if the drum is a large or small 7-spline.

3/8x8 is not easily availiable in small 7, if at all.

Stihl pro saws from 361 and up has the large 7 by now, but some 034/036/360 had the small 7 as standard.

My new Husqvarna 395 XP [94cc] came from the factory with a 7 tooth 3/8 rim sprocket which surprised me. I thought for sure it would have a 8 tooth on it, but it seems to cut just fine with its 32" bar/chain and 7 tooth rim.
Willard.
