I wrote earlier about my difficulties with two model PS 510 Dolmar chainsaws. The first suffered engine failure after about ten hours apparently due to a lean carburetor that was not properly adjusted by the dealer. The current saw ran good for about two hours then refused to start. I was cutting a 30 inch sugar maple which may have gummed up the bar. I returned the non running saw to the dealer for warranty repair and was told that I needed a $150 bar since I had ruined the saw by improper treatment. I took the saw home with out authorizing repair and then sprayed the bar sprocket with WD-40. Apparently the sprocket was gummed up with sugar syrup as I was able to clean and free the sprocket after about ten minutes. There is no evidence of damage to the bar. It appeared to me that most of the shop mechanics are young and relatively inexperienced. I next tested the compression and spark and found them both good. However, the saw will still not start. I next noticed that the new dolmar saw was made in communist china whereas the older one was made in Hamburg germany. At the present time I have ordered a chainsaw repair manual from Amazone.com. I have zero trust in either of the dealers that I have dealt with. According to the internet , Dolmar had a problem with engine failure due to a defective air filter design. Also some one on the internet reported that the Dolmar was the best saw in the world to run, but the most difficult one to get started. The next closest dealer is in Lambertvlle New jersey which is about twenty miles away. I have now tried using carburetor cleaner on the saw. If it does not start within a few days , I will have to drive to Lambertville. I have a 15 year old Stihl 029 saw which I inherited from the father. It is running well and not giving my significant trouble. I am skeptical that the bronze bearing on the Dolmar bar will fail quickly because of lack of oil. There is no mechanism to oil the bushing , and based on my experience as a licensed professional engineer believed that the oil was mainly to allow the chain to slide along the groove in the bar. When I get it running , I will post the results of my experience. Currently I feel as if I must hire a German factory trained mechanic to follow me and adjust the saw once an hour. My experience with anything made in Communist china has not been good. I avoid buying anything with the word China on it when possible. However, most of the free world seems to have abandoned making quality goods in favor of a quick profit obtained by manufacturing in REd China. |
