here is a pic of what i use to clean up a chainsaw, you cant beat the steel wool and green scourers there great on alloy, with the green scourers you dont even need water long as the part is clean..thats what i used on the alloy muffler then a last going over with the soapy steel wool wet of coarse.will be donig the head the same way...cleaning up nuts and bolts with the wire brush on the drill thay will rust if left you can clear coat or paint silver ,not silver frost paint that will wash of with fuel and degreaser use a hammertone or metallic paint ...i learned these tips doing up cars, motorbikes and mowers anything with a engine really over the years lol...

The 090 does look alot bigger,do you now the full weight of the saw with fuel.ya old man must have gorilla arms. It's coming together well the covers look mint.if got an old MAC not to sure details of it never seen them before.a wild guess it may be a 70,s saw.as soon as I figure how to load photos I'll put it on.you may reconisge it.it be perfect to restore still goes so I was told.but wouldn't want to use it.she's had her day.

roque excellent work your doing on the 090 ,I will use some of your ideas to clean mine up too.
Your 090 is newer then a 1982, mine is the same AV handle system as yours and I bought it brand new in 1992. My first 090AV I bought new was in 1983 and it had the older AV handles with the long bent pipe going over top joining the top and rear handle.

Last year I bought a brand new top cover and rewind housing for my 090 from Stihl Canada and these were the last they had in stock. The rewind cover came with a name tag also.
Are you baking your painted parts? In the factory all the painted metal parts are baked for approximately 1 hour at 150-200F.

He must be talking about the rim sprocket, years ago some rim sprockets have had breakage problems but now is a thing of the past.
I think I have only broken 1 ever.

Hi Willard. yes dads talking about the old rim sprockets,i found a box of dads full of 090 parts, It has rim sprockets in it ive never seen before. they must be the ones your talking about. they do look weak to me, will load a pic..every thing in that box would be over 20 to 30years old, has parts for the older 090's as well..Yep its the tags and top covers id like new if i cant get the top covers i will get them repainted by a paint shop so i get the color right.. As for baking the paint no i have not, means id have to strip the whole saw and take it to a shop to get powder coated,at a guess id say the stihl paint would be old lead paint as well.. With my 088 i did up, after using the saw for an hr or so the paint baked from the heat of the saw. seems fine although not as tough as the original paint..the 090 is more a show piece it wont be pushed back into hard service but it will get some use

Pioneer was originally called I.E.L. based out of Vancouver Canada, then a company change in 1957 was when the Pioneer name was born.

Take a close look at a picture of 1956-57 IEL model RA and see how close it resembles a Stihl Contra , the Contra was introduced 3 years later in 1959.

I'll post some pics for comparison later.

We all know when WWII came around Stihls patents were no longer recognized and chainsaw companies in North America and other parts of the world copied the Stihl saws.
Now lets go to 1959 when Stihl revolutionized the chainsaw industry with the Contra / Lightning.
Now let me show you some pictures of the Canadian built 1956-57 I.E.L./Pioneer model RA and some pictures of the 1959 Stihl Contra/Lightning.
Notice the simularities and also take note the Stihl is 106cc with a 58mm bore x 40mm stroke with Tillotson HL carb.
The Pioneer is 100.5cc with a 57mm x 40mm stroke with a Tillotson HL carb.
What went around during WWII came around in 1959.

Willard.

Ok there seems to be some misunderstanding out there about the bar oil pumps on 090's.... Yes they do have an automatic oiler, it runs off a impulse hose connected to the crankcase, now days they use the same setup to pump the fuel in the carbie..you can adjust the flow as well..The pump on the tank is a manual override for doing big cuts with long bars and you just need a little more oil. here are some pics, one showing the adjuster (arrow pointing at it)....

Cleaned up the ports a little and matched the inlet manifold to the inlet port, they didn't match very well, you can see it on post 17 third pic.. And matched the muffler to the exhaust port..cant wait till its up and running. should run sweet, it will be fully sorted
