Default Poineer saw starter question

Chain Saw Starter Question.
I have a Pioneer Farm Saw and the starter suddenly quit engaging. When I pull the cord, the black wheel comes out as it should but fails to come out far enough to engage with the flywheel. Is started suddelny, so I suspect something is broken rather than worn. Does anyone have any ideas where to begin the search? Everything appears to be normal inside the cover, and when I remoeved the comression release mechanism, nothing changed.
Thanks in advance
