first post here, glad i found you, i have several stihl saws one of them my 044 seized and broke a ring, can i obtain the piston, rings and jug and replace for one that has never done it, ie are special tools and knowledge needed to do such? i have noticed that most do not offer the decompression valve in the parts offering, do all the jugs, i believe you call it, not have the valve but do they come with provisions for such and can reuse my own? thanks in advance Bill |

WELCOME!!!!!!!! You come to the right place.... Yes you can fix this yourself!!!!!!! You will need a few tools but nothing that will brake the bank.. Do you know what caused the saw to lock up??? Where have you looked for a new P&C??? O yes you can reuse your decomp valve...

All you need is some torx wrenches (looks like a star on the bottom) a base gasket, piston, and cylinder kit. I've rebuilt all the Stihl chain saws in my signature, and had excellent luck with them. I had used aftermarket P&C kits, for half the price, and my chain saws haven't had a minutes problem with them yet. Bruce.

the saw locked up about 2 minutes after cutting and after i just got it back from service, they said bad gas and did some other adjustments, carb i think, lesson is to learn to do it yourself, none has a better interest to do it right than yourself!! probably looking at an aftermarket kit for p&c i suppose, should i get one from a local stihl dealer? but some of the ones i looked at state that there is not a decompression valve, one would have to have a PORT to put the valve in, do some have the port and some not, it is not clear in the items i looked at. i am familiar with the torx wrenches, thanks for the help Bill |

There is a place online that sells after market big bore kits .... "Complete top end for your chainsaw. This is a big bore kit which comes with an oversized cylinder and piston, which will give your chainsaw increased displacement. Cylinder assembly includes a piston, rings, piston pin, circlips and cylinder. Gaskets are sold separately. This cylinder assembly is NiSi coated for long life. The piston is Moly coated and comes with ductile iron piston rings. We recommend using a piston ring clamp set when changing cylinders. The cylinder comes tapped with deco hole. Fits the following chainsaws:" Ever thought about a 46 top end??????

The one advantage to the 046 topend is the etra power to cut faster |

I was just thinking about this.. If you want to keep it simple stay with the 044 top end.. There may be more involved in the 046 top end then you want to do....

A note, If you get a BB kit and you do not match the weight of the original piston you are at risk of compromising the durability of the saw. As well as you might negate the AV aspect due to the increased vibration. I would also not pay Stihl's prices for the repair componets, they buy their parts from aftermarket suppliers as well..... |

Another word of note is check to be sure the saw is not a 10mm wrist pin. |

Stihl uses Mahle P&C kits. I've had great luck using Golf after market P&C kits. I've dealt with this guy, in the past, Stihl Husqvarna parts items - Get great deals on STIHL pistons, Husqvarna pistons items on eBay Stores! . He is great guy to deal with. Hope this helps. Bruce.

Older 044 with the serial number X29583701 and lower would be a 10 mm wrist pin and higher number would be a 12 mm wrist pin. 044 X29583701 or below = 10mm wrist pin |

"BB"= Big Bore, references the larger sized piston than stock.

| Take a good look, at the cylinder, once you have the chain saw apart. By taking your finger, and feel if there is any groves,on the exhaust side of the cylinder wall, or if you see any gouges, in the cylinder wall, then yes you will have to replace the cylinder, as well. Bruce.

Look to the right of the muffler facing up on the crankcase.
