Default Noob question... okay to laugh.

I finally had the chance to start my recently acquired Stihl MS 361. In the past, the only chainsaw I have owned was a McCullough.

At idle, the MS 361 makes a tinkering bell sound that disappears at full throttle... is this bell sound normal? Just trying to do the right thing with my first Stihl.

... it is okay for you all to:

its just your centrifical clutch hitting the clutch hub. When you rev the saw the clutch shoes expand and engage the clutch which in turn rotates your chain via either a spur or rim sprocket.

Thank you sir... as with all my tools I give them golden gloves treatment. I am a old stinker per se but am still learning something new every day. The insight is appreciated.

Perfect Eric... good to hear! It is good to have some humor in our lives, I have plenty in mine... and I am my best material. I am the guy that will also ask the question that some other noob is wondering too.

Actually, at work I am the oldest guy around... I have been working from before some at work were born. The call me "knob" ... pre-digital when electronics were "knobs and dials". Actually was able to get a ball cap from Knob Creek bourbon.

Around these parts if some-one calls you a "knob" it's got more to do with your intellect rivalling that of a penis.

Have to say that was good for a laugh from both of you. I just wanted to add that your 361 is singing to ya'. It's happy to be running. That's possibly the best all around saw ever made and it gets bored just sitting around. That's a good sound. -------If you want to know more about that saw, just go back through the threads. There is a ton (if you print it, we'll need to cut more trees for paper, haha) of great info back through these threads on the MS361 specs, options, mods, etc. Pretty good stuff, good luck with your saw, hope you get a lot of years out of it.

Actually I have read through, saved and printed out different threads on the 361 options, mods and stuff from this website. Being safe, I also got some chaps from Labonville. Thanks for the singing comment, nice to know that my saw sings better than I do...
