Default My 028 needs TLC

Just joined the site about 5 minutes ago. I have a Stihl 028 AV Super with electronic ignition that I've had since about 1989. It's always been a good saw and I like to think I've taken good care of it. However, recently it seems to lose power when cutting, it's difficult to start, I cant lay the saw sideways when cutting because it loses power, and it sounds like it backfires sometimes when I'm starting it. I would like to repair it myself and I'm wondering first what could be the problem/problems, and second, are parts available for my saw and where. I have contacted Baileys (Chainsaws, Outdoor Power Equipment and Tree Care Supplies from Bailey's) and they responded "that there just aren't enough 028's to produce after market parts". Any help is appreciated, thanks.

check the fuel line, carb boot or gasket. If those have crack or weather checks thats your problem,i also advise performing a compression test.

I've also got an 028AV ...good saw. It was what I started with, and it was 18 years old at that point! Used it for years before I started picking up more. Loved it. (well, still love it, just love my 361 more )

Um, might try pullin the carb out and giving it a good cleaning, check the fuel line, compression test like NG said. Mine just doesnt have the power that it used to have. Or at least that I thought it used to have. Maybe running more powerfull saws just makes it feel kinda wimpy now. <shrugs>

It's a good hardworking long-lasting saw though! Glad to hear other people still have them.

While going Ken check your exhaust is not choked with carbon that will also restrict power.

Hadn't thought of that, but I keep mine SUPER clean.... cleaner than I keep the 361 actually.

I found the best maintenance for an old saw (20+ years old) is regular routine maintenance. I never let the exhaust port on that saw get even close to crudding up..... so I didnt even think of that. But that's a great suggestion JayD. =)

Stihlabeleiver, send me a PM with your email address and I'll see if I can dig you up a Manual and IPL for it.

ken,go buy a can of engine restorer,i know its for cars but take about 1/4 of the can assuming you bought the 4 cylinder formula, and mix it in with your regular mixed gas, that stuff really works.

I'm interested in adding the engine restorer to my fuel as newguy18 suggested but at what ratio. What would you suggest? I've checked for carbon build-up in the exhaust port and there was hardly any after "years" of use.

Thumbs up Re: My 028 needs TLC

STIHLABELIEVER,

If you GOOGLE 'CURTS CHAINSAW PARTS' it will give you an ebay reference.

He might sell direct, not sure.

On ebay he has heaps of 028 parts..........good luck!
