yes i kno i kno worthless as tits on a boar hog. but one of my buddies has one and he loves the way my 66 cuts but doesnt have near the funds to buy one so i am wondering what can be done to make this little saw run better for not much money. im guessing a muffler mod and carb tune and call it good. could you all post some pics so i can get a rough idea on how big of hole to make. thanks.

mod the muff and it will hang with a 361 all day long.....can't do anything about the weight, unfortunately. if he really wants to push it, you can widen the ports and help some, but without being able to set the squish, the gains in that direction will not be optimized.

Really the only things you can do on those clam shell engines is mod the muffler and snip the limiter tabs on the carb and richen them up. But that does a lot for them, and gets the 310 up to about 4.4 HP in a hurry. I have one myself, and I like running it. The 310 is the most vibration-free of the 1127 line of saws (290, 310, 390). See this thread on how to do a simple low loise mod the muffler (on same as the 390): MS 390 fine tuning questions |

JMO on the muffler mod open the center section too. I tried both ways and there was gains made there . I got 23% faster cuts from a MM and carb retune on a MS290.

Big difference IMO woods porting a saw and just opening a muffler up. What one may consider woods ported others may consider just tickled. There's a big slide scale there. Like the old saying is over on racesaws, your saw is only as fast as the company it keeps. |

Here was some cut times to compare gains. MS290 STOCK 1 cut in almost 2 year old dry 10x10 poplar cant RM2 .325 best times. 17.81 18.27. Square sharpened RSC .325 to make a RSLK times. 8.75 9.09. Then muffler modded NO carb adjust. RSLK 325 chain 8.35 8.50 Fined tuned carb with muffler mod RSLK 325 chain 7.03 7.87 hit knot 7.13 6.38 If you notice biggest gain is running some real chain and not semi chisel RM crap for clean wood cutting. |

Very similar to windys muffler mod. Except I had 3 holes on top row and 3 on bottom and 2 holes in center section. I tested no holes in center, then 1 hole and ended up with 2 holes of same size with best results. I have a generic pic of extra added holes to the 2 stock ones somewhere. Take you 5 mins to do and about 30 mins total to remove drill and put back on. Also open lip of deflector just as windys show. The white areas are the extra holes added to the 2 stock ones. | |
