howdy l'm new to this here forum l'm a decent mechanic but l havn't played with chain saws too much l was just given a 192 t it is well used -- climbed quite a few trees anyway the only way l can get it started is chain saw massacre style ( full throttle, with the chain moving) no matter what l do after that (try to let it idle, or keep the thing ripping) it stalls and takes several pulls to start again not really sure where to begin trouble shooting... thanks in advance goat |

My first guess would be a bad impulse line. That is what drives the fuel pump in the carb. Its a tube that runs from the carb to the base of the engine. They can be a PITA to check and replace on many a Stihl saw though. A steady hand, long skinny screwdrivers, pliers, torx wrenches and lots and lots of cursing are usually required. I have replaced them on 200T and 020T saws, but not a 192T. I would imagine that they are the same. If its not that, check the fuel line. Any cracks or plugged up fuel filter will cause similar starting problems. Also check for air leaks (loose carb, bad crank seals), and pull the muffler to check for cylinder scoring. If it is scored bad, it is toast and there is nothing you can do but replace the P&C. Also check the muffler screen to see if it is caked up with carbon or clogged up with oil. That will cause similar issues, as will a badly clogged up air filter. Also pull the plug and check it for fouling. If it is none of those thing, reset the carb to the nominal factory setting (H, L and L/A screws) and try to start it. Maybe the carb is worn out and cannot hold a tune. I had that problem on my 020T after I replaced the impulse line. H & L adjusting screws had loose threads. I had to get a new carb for it.

thanks windthrown my instinct was that it was a fuel pump/ line issue and wondered what that 'extra' tube was for l'm out on ajob building a tree house so it might be afew days till l'm equiped for proper disassembly but the ff looked fine and no obvious dammage to the lines the air filter was rather clogged when l got it but l have a new one (and tried starting the saw with out a air filter for trouble shooting purposes) the plug was clean seemed like kind of a large gap but l haven't looked up what it should be reccon l'll check the muffler here in the field try the impulde lines and fiddling with the carb when l'm back in a shop with tools and a bench and such goat |

so l checked the muffler no clogs though l cleaned the screen and spark arester anyway (tried starting it with out the muffler too) cylinder didnt seem badly scored fixed the plug gap (it was way off) (gaped it by eye since l dotn have a gague here) did soem fiddling with the carb screws it starts easier now though l stil have to start with the throttle engaged and the the brake off but it only runs if l keep it at full throttle dies if l try to idle and after a few seconds it starts to surge the carb floods and spits gas after a little of that it stalls thoughts? so thats all for today back to work you know goat |

How bad is the cylinder scored? Rebuild your carb, reset the needles and check your intake boot. When the saw is levered on the intake boot tears. Here is a 4 part video series that will walk you through the repair; |
