Default Ms 192 T

A friend just gave me his old MS192T, which doesn't currently run, as he just got a new Jonsered. I've been working on getting this saw running, but can't figure out what's wrong with it and don't have the money to take it to Stihl to get fixed. He said the last time he used it it got pinched and when he yanked it out it stopped running and he hasn't been able to get it running since. He thought maybe a wire was just loose in the handle but, so far, every wire I've checked has been connected solidly and such.

Anyone out there have any ideas what could be wrong? I"m stumped...

Lets see,he could have busted a rod, spun the crank,or the magneto gap is too close, maybe he bent the crankshaft?Does it have spark and is it getting gas?

For an internal combustion engine to run, it needs fuel and fire. They will run if other things are NOT quite right, mind you NOT well. If you have both fuel and fire the next step is to see if you have compression.

This is a logical order to trouble shoot the problem. If the saw is lacking ANY of these 3 things, it is useless until fixed. I heard somewhere that the carbs are mounted different than the 200T. I am going to bet that you have a pinched line, wire, OR a hole in the piston.

Sorry I couldn't be more help!

I know it has compression, and I'm fairly certain it is getting fuel. The spark part is what I believe to be lacking... I think.

Pull the plug, put it in the boot of the coil, hold the bottom of the plug in your hand, and pull the pull start, you should feel a little tingle. It doesn't hurt.

Kinda sounds a lot like using a couple of wrenches to test a car battery...

I've done that too,the difference is my method of checking spark is completley fool proof,so easy a caveman can do it,and after doing it if you don't feel a tingle, you don't have spark.Plain, simple and to the point.Thats exactly how i test anything i fix, including vehicles for spark.

I'll try it. If I do have spark... where do I go? If I don't... where do I go?

If you have spark, you need to check for fuel, the simplest way to do that is to pull the choke closed and flood the combustion chamber.
If you don't have spark, pul the recoil cover off and clean the magneto, make sure its bolts are tight and its set properly, done by using a feeler guage and setting to the gap in the owners manual.keep me updated.

it's possible that the intake boot got pulled away from the engine or torn. are any of the handle mounts messed up?

i got ready to pull the plug and didn't have wrench handy to pull it. i'll get to it as soon as i can. right now, i have bigger problems with that saw. i realized the front handle mount wasn't attached so i started trying to fix it.
let's just say there are a lot of little parts in that handle and i had a bit to much alcohol in my system to worry about it at the time.

It has compression, which is good, the handle is just that, doesn't make it run.Fuel and spark should be the biggest priorites, but not with to much beer in your system.

i just saw that it was off and said to myself, "that should be and easy fix" then all the throttle parts fell out, no problem, done them before. then the on/off switch fell out and those springs kicked my slightly drunken arse.

if the handle is moving around chances are the carb is separated from the motor.

The carb is easy to get to,remove the air filter and there it is.

So, I checked the saw today... no spark. I guess now I just have to sort out everything that could keep it from sparking... right? Anyone got a magical list for me of everything to go over?

Buy a new plug and hook it up to the coil,if no spark pull the recoil cover off and check the gap between the flywheel and magneto,if there is sawdust in there blow it out with an air compressor. Also check electrical connections from stop switch to coil.

i'll get on that as soon as i can. do spark plugs in chainsaws foul like they do in cars? it seems like a stupid question to me, but i just want to be sure.

Yeah, actually you can put the plug out of the 192 t in another saw and see if it starts the other saw,if so the you can assume its the air gap.

i've been hauling wood for charly to make up time lost while going to class, but even that's slow. hopefully it'll all pick up now that the weather's going to crap around here. i'm hoping to get this saw running so i can pick up some odd jobs here and there to help make ends meet.
