Hi, Im new to this. I WANT A BIGGER SAW I have an 026. Its not really big enough. Nor is the JD C52, or the Macullough pm 145. I would like to have an 066 or Ms 660. My dilemna is I have no idea other than picking up a new 441 in a showroom. Where do you consider a saw of 066 proportions to be too big? If mostly pine and junk and fence row crud, is this way too much saw? If the one time I slam a big maple on the ground is it worth the money for the new ms660? How do you decide if you cant get your hands on one to try it? Can you work with small trees and a big saw effectively? IS the 460 A BETTER OPTION? I need a lot of info, this is a big purchase and I want to make the right choice. Farm work to firewood. And all in between. But at 16.5 pounds how long before your arms fall off? 026 runs good and I want to get the muffler work done from Scott. Live in Ontario. Not sure how to make that work. Thanks in advance. Biggie |

What dia is the stuff you'll cut? What sort of trees? I think 660 is too much saw, 460 would likely do it, but asking a few questions will help. Here I generally use the 460 up to say 20" dia hard wood ... but our eucs are hard and heavy not like maple or pine. Then for bigger stuff out comes the 660 but it drinks like a fish!

i think 460 is about as big as you need or even the 372xp or 576xp depends on how big the trees your felling are and how you lean i used a 372xp for all my forrestry in britain never had a problem with a lack of power on anything apart from enormous cedars or walnut then the 066 cameout to play but like ekka says they are thirsty wenches.

First of all, How Mechanically Inclined are you? If you are very Mechanically Inclined, you should be able to pick up a Stihl 044, for under $100.00, that has either a Seized Piston, and all it needs is a Piston and Cylinder Kit, along with a Gasket Kit. Also depending on the Bearings. I picked one up last Fall at my local Stihl Dealer Ship, for $75.00, Piston was Seized, but the rest of the Chain Saw was in great shape. Piston and Cylinder Kit for $135.00, Delivered from a guy on eBay, Gasket Kit with all the Gaskets, and Bearing Seals for around $70.00, to $80.00 along with Carburetor repair Kit, delivered from another guy on eBay, and I got the Main Bearings for under $60.00, from my Local Dealer4 as well. So basically I have a almost New Chain Saw, because of the Motor for under $400.00, plus about 2 to 3 Hours of my time. Stock this Chain Saw is around 70 to 72 CC's. I Modified the Muffler for it, and they claim that it gives you about 12%, or more Power increase, and Speed Increase, so I have a Chain Saw that is over 80 CC's, of Power, and Believe me, it has a lot of Power. Just my Opinion, for what it is worth. If it was me, and if you like to Tinker, this is the way that I'd ago Personal. Bruce. (Tried to upload some Pictures of my 044, I don't know what I did to get this Link posted below. Sorry. I'll try later. Bruce.

Well ummm, yeah, So I went and bought a 660. Whoops. I guess I was leaning towards a 460 but I dont know. I got a 24" bar which now im thinking im stupid for this whole thing. 28 would make two 16's pretty nice for firewood. But then again, we got an old junky apple tree out back that is thicker than 24" and its gotta come down. Then the big John Deere comes in and chains out the stump. So I guess i'm going to get a workout but then I am gettin kinda paunchy. Im a farmer so tinkering is what I do best. But I havent come across anything cheap and I've looked for quite a while. I know what your saying and I thought about it, thats why I was looking for an older 066 to redo but nothing available. At least not that I was able to find. I got a good deal, and they threw in a helmet system. (I know what the cost is since I work for the guy who has a dealership and what I paid.) Now I wait and see what she looks like. Think I mucked up this time? Anyone?LOL. Any advice on handling this brute, anthing to anticipate or watch out for? Thanks guys. Appreciate it. Biggie |

Okay I just watched that kickback test. I think maybe I might just put on one of those chains with anti kickback on them. You'd get sliced in two and wouldnt even have time to think to react. Maybe it was a Husky. Yeah thats it. A Husky. Crap. |

| LOL, just hang on hard, wrap the thumb under the top bar and saw to your side a little not like this guy! Also note no helmet, chainsaw chaps or pants and we cant see his boots but they should be steel capped.

. After a few cuts with your Chain Saw, you will see if you are Comfortable or not. A person can get to Comfortable, and Relaxed while running a machine, but if a person slips up, the Machine will always win. Always be Cautious, and Careful around any Machine, and know it's capabilities, and what harm they can Possess to you, or someone else. Bruce.

So yer lookin for a green weenie huh? ![]() What is that again???? Spartek, nope, nothin yet. That's been temporarily put to the side for the moment. I can't seem to get much work here do to the massive illegal mexican population (Bakersfield is a huge crops & orchards area), and they undercut prices so greatly that its not worthwhile to do work here. I havent even seen an asplundh truck, nor any other tree service that didn't have a truck full of mexicans in it. (Note: I'm not racist... but the illegal immigration problem is causing alot of headaches here) Maybe I'll take Bruce's advice and rebuild a bigger saw that I could find cheap on ebay. |

I guess I should have took better care of my right ear. All kidding aside, what can I do with this saw to open it a bit? Thanks |

This may seem like a huge saw to you but it is very light in comparison to what you used to get in this displacement back in the day. Pick up an 880 or 090 for a few hours and your saw will feel like a toy. I have a 660 too and love it. | |

I was wanting to see that Wojoized muffler. I guess a 660 can be done no problem. What about opening the intake side Therrin? Being a tall guy I find that getting only the 24" Bar might been a mistake. Im feeling awkward a bit with it. Maybe I just need to get back into shape. Worked with it for an hour on this dumb apple tree and covered in sweat. Gave up and went and did pony rides for Canada day. Side note: Who has the best workboots? Who sells those pant chaps so you dont have to wear the chaps on top of your pants? Thanks |

I don't know too much about the Pant type Chaps, but I do use the Chaps that go over your Pants or Coveralls in the Winter. I think, or feel, is that if you are going to cut fire wood in the winter, the Chaps that go over your pants would be the best. I used mine all winter, while skidding out tree tops from the bush, and they were great for kneeling to hook up the Chains around the butts of the tree tops, and also to the back of the tractor. Kept my Coveralls dry. Now as for work boots, I just use normal safety work boots, that you can get a TSC. Now I did do some looking in Zellers, and the variety of work boots the Quality of the safety work boots were just as good as at TSC, but a little cheaper as well. In the Winter what I do is I got a pair of rubber boots that Farmers with Dairy Barns use. I bought mine, that were two sizes bigger than what I wear in foot wear, and I got a pair of liners, the same size as what I normally wear, and put them inside. The rubber boots that I got, had a real deep and coarse tread, not like the winter boots. The Tread in the winter boots are not that great for working in the bush. They would let you slip more, because of the tread wouldn't grip as good as the rubber boots. Just my opinion here. Bruce.

(Bruce, you're doing so much better! I'm proud of you man!) Ok, as for the wojo-izing stuff, and the modd'ing questions...I'm TRULy not qualified to answer any of that, I can just point you in the right direction. Scott would know more about any of that. For boots and chaps... we've got entire threads devoted to them. Climbing boots with steel plates whats your hook/boot combo? Chainsaw resistant chaps/trousers, what options in Australia? Your PPE? Climbing Boots - Which are the best http://www.treeworld.info/search.php...8&pp=25&page=3 Saw Chaps - How Long? Chainsaw boot test Stihl pants made in NZ So we probably shouldnt start a new discussion on it here. |
