My 51 is pretty well balanced with a 20" bar.

7-pin 3/8" is what they come with (at least here and in the US). The other options listed in the manual is 8-pin 3/8" and 9-pin .325

9-pin 3/8" doesn't make sence to me at all, on the 361.

I use the 8-pin pretty often, but only with a 15" bar.....

Hey windthrown, that .325 chain and bar really sucks ass, we changed our 250 from it aswell to the 3/8 picco. You know I have never heard anything good about that .325, maybe Stihl are intending it to be a consumer chain and bar?

A .325 Narrow kerf setup probably would be best on both those saws - problem is that Stihl doesn't offer it...

I agree, valid point.

For steady use of a 20" bar I would want a heavier powerhead = 70cc saw.
We run a Husky 365 with a 20 inch bar on it and it seems fine with weight distribution...

Yes, sure - but the 365 weights about like a 70cc saw, without the power - so I would avoid that one.......

Well, I spent 7 hrs cutting that fallen pine today. Gonna finish up the rest of the big cuts tomorow.

The 20" bar with the RS chain is freaking great!!! Went through that stuff like a hot knife through butter. I was really tearing through stuff with that.

Hit the larger diameter stuff with the 25" bar and RM skip chain and it also did a nice job. Went back to the shop today afterwards and picked up another skip chain for the 25" bar. Now I've got 5 chains for the 25" bar. I'll have to pick up some more RS for the 20" bar.

That RS chain is smoooooooooth.... I have trouble imagining the RSC being any smoother.

Even picked up another 14" RM chain for the MS200T, went through just over 3 tanks of gas before the chain needed touching up.

This pine wasn't dead when it fell, so it's pretty easy on the chains and such. Only difficult part is where it partially embedded itself in the earth. I'm making cuts about 95% through all the way down long sections, and then going back afterwards and hitting the last 5% or so, trying like hell to keep the tip from hitting the dirt but it's a losing attempt with some of it.

I was trying to do 90% cuts down long sections and then roll them to touch-cut the rest, but alot of the leaders had branches embedded underneath them when they hit the ground and I can't roll the sections.

All in all it was a good day. The h.o. came out and took pics and vids with his digicam then burned me a cd. I'll post pictures and such by sometime this evening, I'm dog tired and headed ot take a nap.

Ended up using the 028 with the .325 chain on the 18" bar only just a couple times. It feels kinda gutless even compared to the 200T. Could be because it's 20 years old. <shrugs> The MS200T and 361 combo were just screamin today though. Went through a gallon and a half of bar oil.

Instead of converting the 028 to 3/8" full I think I'll convert it to 3/8" LP instead. I'm not seeing that saw pulling a full 3/8" very well, but I think it would power the low profile 3/8" pretty nicely. Especially after bringing it down to a 16" bar.

For perfect balance, as Troll probably knows: 20 inch bar on 372.

The other day while I was up in Lake Hughes, I stopped by my old landlord's place and bought his "alaskan mill" setup.

Which, incidentally, came with a near-new Stihl rollomatic ES sprocket tipped, 3/8, 28" bar... So it looks like I won't be needing to go out and buy one

The length rod on the mill measures 30", and with the extra 4" or so on the tip clamp guard, I'm pretty sure it'd take a 32" bar with no problem.

Nope... it's a standalone kit that you use with your own saw, and he kept his =)

When I use it I'll be hooking it up to the 361 for now. It's a "small" kinda deal, like I mentioned, only good for up to a 32" bar.

for now it'll work, just remember milling is very taxing on a saw.

Coming from the guy who uses vigorous plunging in lieu of using wedges?

I'll keep that in mind NG =)

BTW, what chain is best for cross cutting like that?

hey guys i'm in pennsylvania we cut every thing from pine to oak ash maple you name it hard or soft wood mostly hard. 361 stick with the 7 tooth rim 24' bar is great on these saws 16' if you want a speed limbing saw. best thing to do warm weather flip the shutter to summer then lean out your high side carb screw. thing will scream

Thanks for the tip Jimmer460

The other day I actually picked up some RSC chain for the 20" bar. Was looking for RMF but they didn't have any. Didn't even have normal RS or RM for it either, and no spools so they couldn't make any. Everything came in pre-packaged boxes. (a new shop I was checking out)

So I ended up with the RSC....and I was wrong. It DOES have less vibration than the RS (go figure huh?) Pretty smooth stuff alright.

Even when I touch up my chains I still don't get that "new edge" feeling back, so I'm thinkin about getting the bench grinder chain sharpener now.
