Assuming the pitch and gauge are identical, what are the limitations on the number of drive links:signs101. For example, if you have a 14 inch bar, 3/8 pitch, .043 gauge, with a 49 drive link chain can you use a chain that has 54 drive links? Is there any general rule for substituting chain with a different numer of drive links. I assume as long as you can adjust the chain to the proper tension, any number of drive lins will work, correct? I have some longer chains that are of the same gauge and pitch, but have varying numbers of drive links. ![]() Thanks Tarrot |

The only problem is the difference in the bar adjuster travel length on different bar styles. |

I have 2 saws that are both running 12" bars in .050 L/P chain; one runs 44 drive links, the other runs 45 drive links. The chain off the saw with 44 links just fits the other saw at a squeeze, but it won't work the other way around after the chain stretches a bit, as the chain gets too loose, even at full adjustment. I also have a saw that runs a 10" bar with .050 L/P and 40 drive links & those chains are not inter changeable with either of the above 2 saws. I hope that helps? |

99% of the time you'll want a chain with the exact number of drive links. A chain 1 drive link longer may work for a while but as it stretches and the chain tensioner is at max you won't be able to get correct tension on it.... and then you'll have to take a drive link out! | |
