Question If only two saw to Own ?

If you were forced to have ONLY THREE chainsaws for the rest of your wood cutting days what is your options ?

Me

Stihl MS 460 36" Bar
Stihl MS 170 16" Bar
Stihl MS 260 24" Bar

So let the saw dust fly

I really only need two

MS200T
MS460

All saws can cut over double the bar the length if the operator is skilled.

True, Eric.

For me - a light 60cc saw like an MS 361 and a 460 as well.

No need for anything smaller than a light 60 where I work.

Here's a vid I did right before I got my chaps and hat. So, uh, do as I say and get protective equipment, and not as I do... er. I am wearing ear plugs, and you can tell I have 2 pairs of jeans on - better than nothing, I suppose:

Used a humbolt notch, and an MS361 with 24" bar and skip chain(I didn't have my 460 with me when he asked if I could bring the tree down). It was out in the open and leaning, otherwise I would have grabbed another couple of wedges and the 460 - which were an hour away. There was only one branch on the cutting side I was concerned about, most of the weight was on the leaning side(hence the leaning). What worried me more was the creaking coming from the roots...

Wyk you are right about skill of operator. I have been force to used a short bar on big cedar once and it was tricky for sure. The Ms 460 I have was payment for a job so I use it with a three foot bar do to not knowing how big a tree I maye need to cut. I can do a lot of fairly big trees with the ms 170 saw, just have be payin close eye balls to what you are doing.

Why would I lie? Your post makes no sense.
Come over here and cut down a maple like this in ground so soft your boots get stuck sometime. You're welcome to visit.

"started leaning after it lost a huge branch"

"What worried me more was the creaking coming from the roots..."

Im quoting you, how can i lie.

It doesn't matter if the tree was in a swamp, there is no way born you could hear that with the chainsaw running full noise and ear pugs in.

Has anyone else ever seen a tree lean over from loosing a big branch? Please get some education or stick to your day job.

As politely as i can say it, ill say no more but thanks for the invite.

Sure, I've seen a tree lean over like that, and heard the roots creaking - it just means he is impatient and wants to cut the tree down and fell in the direction he wants it to fall, before it does it on its own. As for hearing the roots creaking or cracking - I would be leery about standing anywhere near the tree if it was that unstable... but it has happened to me - scares me some.

For me 020 Stihl 15" bar, MS460 24" bar, for bigger trees 2100 Husqvarna with either a 28" bar or 43"

I'll second that Brent. Wet ground like that causes the root ball to rock around breaking anchor roots [makes a noise in the wind] tree leans especially when large balancing branch is missing.
Trees balance them selves constantly by sending out branches for balancing as they grow.
MS200T-16", 346XP-16" and 576XP-22" AutoTune. Anything bigger needed 395XP- 32".

Quote this, Son: You are an ignorant fool.

In 2008 Oregon had a 'storm of the century'. And we are still cleaning up after it. In fact, I have a stand on our ranch that still has leaning pines and blow downs that has been trying to kill me for months. Many large trees fell, were blown down, or in blow down sites - leaning severely, etc. During that storm this Maple I felled lost a huge limb(which you can see missing in the video), and began to lean from then on out(which you can also see in the video as well), leaning more and more each year. During it's leaning, it opened up the ground opposite the lean - exposing the roots more and more(the hole that I fell in while moving away from the tree at the end of the video). Rot began to take hold both in the roots and the upper trunk(and you can see it as the tree falls - there is about an 8" dark spot on the trunk on the side the branch broke off from). There was also a large hole under the tree where the roots were exposed. With a tree that is this big(5.5' at the base), leaning this much(about 4* or so), with roots exposed, pulling up earth, and in soft ground to begin with, along side a path to the creek, it MUST come down ASAP before it comes down on someone unexpectedly. The property owner should have had it removed in 2008, let 3 weeks or so ago.

If you listen to the video you can hear the tree creaking. Anytime a tree of this size is leaning this much, it WILL start to creak as you work on it - especially with roots exposed.

Now, go back home, learn some manners, grow up or cry to someone who will listen to your ignorance. I am done with you.

WYK

Wyk is right I have seen maples do what is desribed and seen in the video. Maples here in Oregon in wet area's when damaged can do weird things. I had a poplar do a similar lean, the roots weakened and were pop and cracking do to the tree being felled.

Actually, I think that storm was Dec 2007, wasn't? In any case, we are still cleaning up after it. And I cam still cleaning up after that maple. It is huge. I'm 8 chain sharpenings into it now.

If I could only have two saws it would have to be .....................
MS660 20"
MS660 32"

Big one snellerized so I don't get them mixed up.
Little one just for firewood and limbing....
Also a spare 660 for parts or to put on the wall..
