On the 372 XP flywheel there is a key on the taper to locate the flywheel in the correct position. This allows the ignition to be correctly timed. My key has sheared off. To replace you have to buy a complete new flywheel. $160 plus I hear. I plan to cut a key-way in the flywheel taper and make my own key to fit the key-way in the flywheel and the crankshaft. Can anyone tell me where exactly the key/key-way should be located to ensure correct ignition timing. I cannot see any marks on the existing flywheel to indicate this and although I do have a workshop manual there is no information on this. Thanks |

Many times keys are removed from the flywheel to advance ignition timing. Im sure if you take a real close look at the inside mount of the flywheel, you will see where the key was cast into it. Line it up over the slot in the crank and away you go. If your worried about it moving a small drop of blue loctite will hold it.

Thanks for the quick reply. I though I did that initially where the most likely mark was and it had a spark but did not start. So I have slightly advanced the timing, (about the width of the key-way) and it did start. I have marked the spot and should all be ok now. Thanks a lot. I have a workshop manual if anyone wants a copy emailed. Regards |

Glad everything worked out. Should be a good runner now.
