Hi, I have recently purchased a Stihl MS361c. The chainsaw is excellent, but the chain brake doesn't work- i assume the band is worn. Are these easy enough to repair/replace? Can anyone point me to a web site which outlines the process for replacement or repair or am i better putting it into a stihl engineer? Thanks |

No, the C (and C-Q) model of a Stihl usually designates a quick chain adjuster and an added automated chain brake mechanism that the 'normal' Stihl saws do not have. The brake mechanism locks the chain when it detects a fast upward movement of the bar during kick-back. To check or fix the chain brake, pull the side cover, bar and chain. Then pull the brake mechanism cover which is above the clutch/sprocket bolted in place by 2 torx bolts. There is a metal band that wraps around the sprocket that is the brake, and that is attached to some springs and levers that are activated by the brake paddle. On the CQ models, there is an extra intertia element that also activates the brake. |

Totelion, Also---check to make sure you don't have any lubricants on the sprocket/brake----this will cause it to slip rather than engage. Good luck, Mike

Hi guys, Had a look at it today, the band has snapped. I'll pick up one tomorrow, looks easy enough to fit. Thanks again for the advice. |
