World Record video, Saw is built by Cliff Helsel and has a righty pipe. Has the same clutch set up I have on mine.
Every 3120 880 084 166 hotsaw I have seen in USA has a clutch set up at the big shows and top competitors. Even Bertrands saws I have seen.

Only direct drives I have seen is on a bikesaw.

Video of record run in 12" round.

Thanks for the video. Also thanks for the correction, my comment about all the big runners running no clutches I meant to say bikesaws. At the time I wrote it my wife was over my shoulder yelling at me to get off the computer. Brain just doesn't function well under attack.
The last year [before my bikesaw 1983] when I was running factory stock appearing hotsaws my brothers were running Mac 101 kart engines and myself with my Stihl 090 on alcohol and pipe. Like alot of guys at that time I replaced the 090s heavy clutch with a direct drive hub. Talk about weight saving making the saw a little more nimble at the cold start and between cuts, picked up a few revs too.
Maybe its just me but if I built another factory hotsaw I would get rid of the clutch.
Willard.

Wankel sounds like a rotary powered saw. Pipe wouldn't be needed, not a 2 stroke. I wonder what country that was video taped in.
