Default Help putting clutch back together.

I'm replacing the clutch spring on an old McCulloch Titan 57 and I cant get the spring joined up. Please look at the pics and tell me if there is an easy way to do this. I've tried little screwdrivers and even looping some thin wire around the ends and pulling them together but I just can't get them joined up.

As you can see, once the spring is threaded through, there's not much room left to be able to stretch and join it.

It looks like (out of my repair manual) that you will have to remove the retaining plates. These plates are held on by rivets (or pins), and you will have to drive them out from the back, with a hammer and a punch of some sort. Hope this helps you. Bruce.

Thanks Bruce. I was considering removing the rivets but was unsure how to remove and replace the rivets so I persevered with a couple of tiny screwdrivers and managed to join it up. Now I just need to put it back together and hope it's OK.

What a bugger of a set up that is! The only saw I have that I need to pull the clutch off to put in new springs is the Stihl 200T, the other Stihls you can do as easy as changing the chain.

I agree with you on that Ekka. It looks like a Royal pain in the Kahunas. Bruce.

I got it all back together today. 2 pulls and the bloody cord broke. Will try and replace it in the next couple of days and give it another try.

Man that sure is no matter, when that Happens. I used to have a Homelite (Homosexual my Uncle use to call them ) XL 76, that was Notorious for doing that. I hated that chain saw, I had to pull on that starter rope, till I was almost blue in the face to get it to start, even when it was warm. Bruce.

Replaced the cord and got it going no worries. The spring mustn't be quite as tight as the original as the chain still moves a little at at idle. It runs fine though and I'll try dropping the the idle speed a touch. I can put the chain brake on without it stalling so I'm sue it will be fine.

I wouldn't touch the idle jet on the carburetor, but the one for the throttle, that is the one you need to adjust. If the chain dances a little (moves a tiny bit ahead, and stops and starts), but not spinning, I'd leave it.
My 044, 034, and a couple of my McCulloch chain saws do that, now and again, and once the chain saw motor will settles down, to a slower idle on it's own, the chain will stop moving altogether.
But make yourself aware of the chain, and if you have to walk a little with it running, I'd Defiantly have the brake on.
Bruce.

I agree, that being in the line of work that you are in Ekka, it is important for anyone to carry the extra parts, that you carry. Reason is, if you are miles away from your shop, and if something goes wrong, you have to go and get what ever parts you need to get up and running again.
If not, there is the travel time, back and forth, lost time in the field, doing the task at hand, and lost time of day light.
When I used to custom cut fire wood, I too had extra parts in my tool box too, and I had 4 chains per chain saw, one would get dull for what ever reason, threw a sharp one on, and kept cutting. No time lost doing the job.
Then It was a few hours work, every night to get chains sharpened, with a filing guide.
Better to do it at home, instead of trying to do it at the job site, with the customer standing over you, wondering if he was paying you to sharpen your chain too. Then back at it the next day, with sharp chains, again.
Have to make Hay while the sun is shining, my Dad would always say. Bruce.
