I saw about 8 cords a year for home heat and camping. Most of it is from trees dropped in the woods. Do I really need a hard hat? Last year I did get a limb to the head, but it didn't even cut me. That got me thinking.

I have been a climbing arborist for 20 years and for the first 5 I only would wear baseball cap and earmuffs. lucky not to be hurt. Iyou are ever limbing, pruning, removing or falling a tree the rule is helmet earmuffs and chainsaw are all and the same they go together. It on takes one small branch to kill you. I have been hit on the head countless times wearing a helmet and even had a large limb hit me and break the helmet. but i have never been hurt and can still gohome tomy family every day and to work the next day. I know many people in the tree industry who have been severly injured and off work for weeks and months for not wearing adequate PPE. Shop around spend the money and buy a helmet that is comfortable and that you would be happy to put on every time you start your saw. you whill then have a chance of living another day to enjoy life and go skiing perhaps winter is almost here.

You just reminded me to get one! An almond limb about 5 metres up whacked me in the skull as it swung in a way not anticipated while on the end of a rope a few years back. I had the same issue again today (slow learner!) except the limb, while swinging on the end of a rope in a way not anticipated, missed my thick head!

I picked one up. Could only find all white. I will have to seen if I can get some Stihl stickers for it. Thanks for the advice.

Personal experience says even a small limb can do damage if it hits you right. I always wear a chainsaw helmet while cutting. It's hot and looks geeky but the face shield keeps crap out of my face and it's got my hearing protection attached.
