Angry a good dealer

Can anyone tell me (no experience mechanically with 2strokes) where a good/knowledgeable stihl dealer is in melbournes SE. So far ive been roundly beaten to death by the local one chargeing $20 for a sharpen, $76 per chain ............ happy to stay with stihl dealer but not one that wants me to sign over my first born...

Chains I do here is $5 for up to a 24" 84dl. That includes hitting rakers if needed. It's going to cost you shipping wise .

Why not buy your own grinder and save a few bucks. As to dealer see if you get a better deal by makining up your own cains and or order them off the internet.

if you file your chains yourself you get more wear out of them.
Buy a spinner and chain breaker and buy 100ft lengths of chain and make them yourself it's about 60% cheaper.
what do you do at the moment if you hit a nail or soil in the tree? do you just change chains and wait til you get to the stihl dealer?
I took my husky into the dealer for an electrical problem they looked at the chain which was almost down to the line but razor sharp and said we cant file them down that far are you really going to use it like that? took it out the next day and used it for 6 hours on a tallow wood then retired it after. you will get to know how far you can take your chains if you spend time on them yourself.

Dont even need a grinder really. I only use a grinder on severely rocked out chains. Hand filed is the best cutting IMO.

$2 file of correct size and then if you like comforts, $1 handle, then a $5 file guide, then a $5 raker file and raker gage.

I agree on hand filin chains. I just use the grinder to make sure the chain stays close to specs. I charge 5 saw chips no matter what chain. Me i can hand file fairly quick and accurate. The price of chain down under is crazy high

Thanks for the offer i actually have to get out that way over christmas to cut alot of wood( dunkeld, meredith,MT mercer). Might organise to sort something out.
And yes I do hand file however my skills arn't that great so every 3rd or 4th sharpen i like to get everything reset by a professional. I also don't tend to cut dirty s@#$ wood so I don't have alot of trouble with nails, rocks and fencing wire etc..

Where are you in SE Melb?
Where are you already going?

Ace saws in Braeside is good, even better that i can walk there!
Stihl shop Mentone is OK.

Best bet is to get taught by a pro how to hand file.

Carlton chain is cheaper than Stihl.

Loggerbob i've got a 7tooth sprocket
Ace saws is where i got the sharpen and chain from at those prices....
Maybe they don't like the look of me or something but those prices just seem a little excessive... And if I found out they charged me more than other customers I won't go back on principle.

I don't mean to be perdantic but its not about saving money. If $76 bucks was the going rate for the chain I'd pay it all day. I just don't want to pad the wallet of someone who is quite prepared to rip off an unsuspecting buyer. Thanks to you guys and all the years of experience in this one place I will be alot harder to rip off in future.
P.S. Thanks loggerbob when I plan to come your way I'll organise something with you.

Going rate for a 84/85* dl chain from the dealer in D'ford is $45 Cost off the roll is $24.50.

Anyone that thinks that's an o.k. price can send $ and have it from me for that price. $460/1640=$0.2805 per DL

And I'm working on getting a bulk order of chain to get the price below $400 per roll

*85 dl for a 25'' bar with 8 rim sprocket

$20 is the current price for sharpening a chain that comes in on a machine. ie we have to take it off, sharpen it, check raker depth and/or adjusted them and put it back on the machine and adjust the tension correctly.
alternatively a plain loop chain (off the machine) is sharpened for $14.
as for the $76 buck 3/8 STIHL chain it must have been 84 or 85 links as that is the rrp from STIHL. but there are cheaper chains (brands) with lower quality and durability available if needed.
hope this clarifies any misunderstandings

There is no need to charge $76 for a chain that when purchased in a 100' roll will cost me $24 that's at least $52 profit (not that i wouldn't want to make that sort of margin) my conscience just wouldn't let me (F**king cricket )
I use a 100' roll about every 4 months but I run 3 saws and I give it to my old man for his saw and sell a lil bit to get some beer money.
I have also started to import a few saws cos It's just not justifiable to charge $2000 odd $ for the same saw I can import from the U.S. for $1400 PHO and that includes giving my friend $100Au for his part. (what is the mark up for saws in Aus???)
