I'm a jonny guy but don't like the choice for the small saw. I've not seen or used the 22 series saws but I like their 50-60 cc saws in the 20 & 21 series. 2171 is a great saw.
2054 or 2159 and 2171 for me would make a great 2 saw combo.

Somewhat new to the chainsaw world, I have cut firewood for the last 7 years with a shindawa 695 pro, and 2 years ago purchased a 359 husky, and my last trip to the saw shop a month ago i purchased a beautiful little MS200 and a MS460 Magnum ! Havent used either one yet, Still trying to figure out how to tell my wife ! but soon !

MS200 limbing machine
MS460 32" bar
359 to finish any smaller stuff.

id have to say the 359 and the 372 is a great combo for firewood. 372xp with a 24"-32" and a 359 with a 16"- 20". but dolmar is a great brand as well. if i could id prolly take a dolmar 7900(84cc big bore) 24"- 36" and then a 5100 16" - 20".

I have an 064 with 20 and 36 inch bars, an 029 and a Husky 435.
Looking for an 066 to run the 36 inch bar, (want to do a saw up).

Mostly cut 12 to 24 inch common gum, with some larger red gum when I can get into it. Green and dry wood depending what I can get.

The 435 is mainly for small wood around property. Trimming lower branches etc.

I don't normally cut firewood, so I didn't vote, but I was recently talked into cutting up a rather large pile of firewood for a very nice customer; it certainly gave me some insight into the differences between cutting firewood & pruning/removing trees for a living! Cutting firewood was harder on me & my saws than my normal "work" would have been! The customer did all of the stacking & clean up, so I was just cut, cut, cutting all morning! My experience showed me that you need at least an equally durable saw to the pro saws if you're going to continually cut a large amount of firewood.

For the record I found my 7901 useless as a firewood saw, way too much saw! The MS260C & the Echo 350T did the bulk of the cutting that day. Whereas the 7901 with either a 24" or 17" B&C in partnership with a top handled saw is my preferred combination for removals. Just my .02

Nice Kevin I was given a 7901 to demo with, It took some getting used to I found it lacked fuel capacity and the rubber seals got to be top notch. I cut only with semi chisel as the old fire wood blokes who I off sided with only used it easier to sharpen and it holds its edge better in tough dry wood. I use it for felling as well as its a bit more resilient to sand in the bark with Ironbark and piping, How do you go with the air filter in the 7901?. I didnt like it till I put a rubber band round it to give it some thing better to seal with only had to wash it every 2 days then. As I brought 4 new saws this year a DCS9010 a DCS50/45
a Stihl 660m and a Stihl 381 I cant justify buying an other saw atm I d recomend trying Carlton chipper chain for your next fire wood endevor its usally cheaper then oregon and is supper simple to maintain in my opinion Its nice to see some one else giving the Makitas a run in a full time type enviroment.

I re-read my post & should clarify that I was only cutting relatively small logs that day. Lots & lots of small logs lol! From about wrist thickness, up to 15-18" across.

The problem with the 7901 was: 1. for me, its too heavy for cutting that much timber & 2. I had to constantly know where the nose of the bar was, as there was timber literally everywhere. Small kicks off 35-52cc saws are bad enough lol!

I'm with you on the Carlton semi chain! I buy mine already made up in loops from a local SA business at a very good price.

I have no probs with the air filter on the 7901, mine is the model with the "pre" filter on it & as long as I keep the chain sharp, I can easily go for months of usage without even blowing it clean. All I ever usually get is a few saw chips & diced leaf matter in the housing. Having owned an MS260, any other air filter is fantastic to me after that lol!

I hear what you're saying about fuel; I only get about 20-30mins out of a tank. But that can be good too, when it's hot, I get to take a break every 20-30mins

You lucky bugger! 4 new saws in 1 year! How do you find the 9010 & MS660 compare to each other?

The 9010 is lighter to the 660 and is a great cross between the stihl and the husky its not a noisy as a husky but still has good torque like a stihl, it s got a bit more of the ergonics that huskeys are great for . And at $1100 for a new power head its kinder to the bank, I run 20" and 25" Tsumura bars on the makita using .063 chain so I can sandardize my chain with the 660, The standard bar studs on the 9010 have been machined down to take the husky stud patten or you need to use an 880 bar on it ( and I couldnt get a 20" 880 bar ) great for Iron bark with skip toothed chipper chain.
I d sugest a Peterson Slabing mill or there is a Logsil electric slabing chainsaw Id try it with a gen set and a long extention cord lol if that fails the 880 got a bit more whompf to it talk to BobL in here about it

The 9010 is over a pound heavier than the 660 from memory, but as you said they are good value in Australia.

I steal my bothers 029 18inch and I use my 660 32inch. I can't think of a better saw combination. Plus I've gotta cut fast if I'm to stop dad from breaking his back useing his old jono. Nothing cut r-gum like a 660. However I know a few boys down gippsland way that use 880's and 1 bloke who uses an old 090

I have a new ported 441CR M-Tronic with a 28'' ES Light bar on and its my most used saw out of all of them for felling and blocking firewood,it has a lot going for it.

No tune (auto tune)
Better AV
Better air filter system
Uses less fuel
More torque and power than a stock 460
Comes with (wrap model)
High out put oiler
Twin bumper spikes
Roller chain catcher
Large clutch cover
Stiffer AV springs

I used a 441 for a full day not so long ago knocking root balls of some pines in windrows and was impressed by the comfort in comparrison to my 460 (which has almost taken the dogs spot through its loyality). It was lacking in power to the 460 (and the 460 is getting a little tied). I'm guessing the porting must make a big difference and was there a muffler mod done with that to match?

Cheers

Tony
