I got 7 brush piles burned this winter and this one looked like a good background for my 2 favorite saws.

It does look good, like the saws are hanging out there after a hard days work in the snow having a beer and chatting. I used to burn slash piles regularly on a 100+ acre tree stand that I managed. Hard work, that.

I usually leave the brush piles in my bush, alone, and let the Cotton Tail rabbits, make a home out of them. Bruce.

In this state you have to burn slash and brush piles by law. Its for fire control out of the urban areas. Inside the urban areas you have to either chip it or take it to a dump. Generally there is more than enough debris left for wood rats to build their lodges. Beavers will drop their own trees to build them with. I don't think that jackrabbits build nests here with debris; they use grasses and other softer material. Squirrels will grab all kinds of things to make tree nests out of. I saw one yesterday chewing on an old skunk skull that was in my garden for a while. Thing had it up about 30 feet in the a tree, making a racket chomping on it. Weirdest thing.

I use my Stihl 034 Super for out in woods, but I use a Homelite XL2 and a McCulloch 3516 for cutting firewood in the yard. That way I won't lose any sleep if I break a firewood saw.

Cutting hard dry woods like Box red gum and sugar gum on 2-3 foot wide logs I use 3120xp with a 24inch bar.
12-14 inch limbs 272xp 20inch bar, below that I use 357xp 18inch bar, or the nasty little 254xp, such an agro saw, best power to weight ratio saw I have ever used.

We also use red and sugar gum for firewood and I usually just cut up branches that come down in bad weather. At the moment I'm using a 361 for my limbing saw and a 660 for the bigger stuff.

i don't know if these were mentioned, didn't read the thread, but the best two saw combo is the 7900/346 and the best single saw is the 262.

+ 1

I am working on getting that combo and hopefully I can try it out next week. The 7900 is already my favorite all round saw.

I voted Jonsered, but in reality I would be running a 2153 and a 2171. The equivalent of a 346xp and a 372xp.

i just use an 066. it will make a cord in less than 2 tanks of gas and in around 45 min in the right timber. then again i have better things to do than wait on my saw. so on using three saws that means u have 3 chains/airfilters to clean/sharpen at the end the day vs 1????? well i suppose whatever floats your boat.

Right now, I'm using a 024, 024 super, 2 o34's, one 044 (as soon as I get the new crank shaft, for my other 044, I'll have it up and running again, making it 2 044's), just fuel, and put bar oil in the saws, at the start of the day, when they are out of fuel, and bar oil, just grab the next saw, in that size, and keep cutting, and I change out the chain, once it is getting dull, at the end of the day, ready for the next cutting day. I have 6 chains, per length of bar, that I use, and with the chain grinder, makes quick work, for sharpening them again.
I also have a 064, with a 24" bar, and a 084, with a 30" bar, for the bigger stuff, that I'm cutting, here on the farm. But mainly, I just use the other chain saws, to get the job done.
But that's me though, what ever works for one, may not for another. Bruce.

Interesting debate! Choosing a saw from among the best is very tough, almost daunting. I inherited a nice little Stihl (old but good), to which I added the following (got bit by the CSaw bug) as my needs changed:

Stihl 009L 14"; Jons 2138C 16"; Mak/Dolmar DCS510 18"; Solo 656 20"; EFCO 165, 24"; Echo PAS265 w/pole saw.

I have to give the highest marks to Mak/Dolmar, Solo & Efco (best). The Echo is an excellent pole saw (Efco, Stihl & Husky also make good ones).

Prices are high in Canada (taxes kill you), so I get mine from Husqvarna Chainsaws, Outdoor Power Equipment and Tree Care Supplies from Bailey's in the USA; with s&h and tax, they're still cheaper.

I have to agree with you. Is if this country, isn't in bad enough shape economical, for the people, the Government brings in this new 13% HST tax, and where you didn't have to pay tax on, like a lot of groceries, now you have to pay. Oh well. Bruce.

I have run Stihls for 30 yrs and only 2 yrs ago I have switched completely to Husqvarna......338, 346, 372, 576, 395.
Yesterday I dug out my old 044 , 066 and put them to work. Just like reuniting with a couple of old friends. Power is still very respectable and man I sure missed their master control switches !!!

Willard I picked up another older 066 that has a clear tank, metal flywheel with appears 2 key ways marked x and p ???? and has area in plastic for the redlight, but is just a molded plastic area with spot for it. It must have come out right after the redlights, because the crank going by serial number is the smaller crankshaft bearing one.

Is your 044 the 10mm one or the later updated 12mm wrist bearing one?

My 044 is the 10mm model, ser.#19246743. I never had a problem with its crankshaft. I've replaced the piston and rings twice since new in 1989. I have outcut 046's and 460's with this 044 and no mods have been done to it. I believe the lighter 10mm bottom end is the reason for its power.
I just picked up a newer 066 [newer to my redlite] which is missing a few parts....air prefilter, clutch drum, chain brake lever. But runs real nice. Its got the poly flywheel and decomp button on top, ser.#134989911. Don't have a clue what year it is.
I'm keeping these Stihls in my work fleet alongside my Huskies from now on. Just nice to have some variety .

I'm gonna dig out the full wrap handle for the 044 and put it back on. A little bit of a PIA with the handle catching on the other saws in the truck bed, but sure makes the saw handle nice while blocking and limbing big hardwoods.

Agreed there I sold all my 084's 3120's 166's.

Kept my 2 stihl 066, husky 2 376, 375, 372, 365 SP, 362xp, 346, partner 6+ 5000, Jonsered 490 590, poulan 325, 3750, 415, poulan 33cc TH's, solo 637 (not sure on # 40cc) TH, redmax 5000, and some others i cant recall off hand. See not a biased bone in my body either.

Now I would mid another dolmar 7900 and a solo 681 someday.

Well for me all I use is a Stihl Ms 460 3' bar . Mine is setup with a K&N velocity stack. She is pretty much a one saw show. If I feel like being old skool I use my old Homelite 770 GS with 1/2" pitch chain. For really big wood I have a McCulloch 7-55 two man converted to be use one man, it has 3/4" pitch chain.

I cut 5 cords a year on public land with a permit, mostly downed trees and some dead trees that I can drop. It is about 90% Oak and 10% Madrone /Pine etc.

I use one saw for all- MS290 with a 24” bar, would like to switch to an 18” but haven’t got around to it yet.

I have used this saw for 5 years now and have only changed a fuel line a chain and 1 spark plug.
