The 024 is a pro quality saw, basically the same as the 026 - but with a smaller engine.

Yes the 024 was one of Stihls first "new generation" saws from the mid 1980s. A top commercial pulpwood production saw.

Stihl sometimes juggled their saw model names over the years. They would introduce a pro commercial grade saw, a few years later the saw's c.c. displacement was raised and then the pro market would be gone on the smaller version. So to pickup sales for the smaller version Stihl would call it the "Farm Boss". Excellent marketing strategy.

You are 100% right - and that combo is the ideal one over/up here - my personal favourites without a shadow of doubt....

Forgot to say; The MS240 is still made, but not sold in the US (not here in Norway either).

I checked out Stihl's world sites and found the MS240 is available in the Netherlands.
I found the 08S was still available in Brazil, now there is a saw with a long track record .The 08S is what I call the ultimate [most durable] top handle saw ever made.

One thing I did find out about the 024, just like the 034, there was three different Versions of these Two Models. Bruce.

Well, after veering off course, back to the poll...(yeah i know it's a little old).
Last pair of saws for firewood....

They would be Stihl, but NOT the 180 and 290. Where did these come from? Lowest cost, maybe?

I do believe they would have to be the MS200 (rear handle) and MS361. Not much experience with saws, but based on what I've read, couldn't find a better pair for firewood. And they should be your last purchase.

Now, this is my $0.02.

I would go with an MS 260 over the MS 200 RH and an MS 361 myself, if they had to both be Stihls. The 260 has the advantage of inboard clutch compared to the 346xp and the MS200. And for firewood, the 260 and 361 are a good set. I usually run with a 361 and a 361 for firewood cutting.

Hey Windthrown, appreciate your comments. Actually, bought a 260 PRO last month and with any luck will pick up a 361 before this months out. Picked up a 192T a week after the 260. Don't cut any firewood but had plenty of wood on the ground from the MidWest ice storm. Now I'm looking for wood to cut!

Luv my 260 PRO. I was just going with the spirit of the poll. The MS200 rear handle appeals to me due to the light weight if I was just working on firewood for a day or more. With the 361 picking up the heavy lifting. No expert here, so again, to be clear, this is my $0.02!

And before we start the great debate, have 7 Stihl dealers (with plenty of parts) within about 15 minutes of me, and all others hard to find. I think one Husky dealer 30 minutes away but doesn't stock much.

My saw plan is to keep picking up saws as long the wife thinks they're "around a hundred or so". She's not stupid so this may not last long With any luck, maybe a 460 in June.

These days I only use 660's & 880's for all my felling and blocking, there is nothing like brute power to get a job done quickly, and no i'm not a heavyweight.

Yes the MS24O is available in Canada. I bought 4 -4liter jugs of Stihl chainoil from my Stihl dealer yesterday and he put them in a discarded Stihl MS240/MS260 box.

By the looks of that tree, that wouldn't last too long with that saw. . What kind of wood is that tree? Bruce.

Cool Re: firewood saw

I do not understand the need for a 70cc saw for firewood. I picked up another 026 so I have a pair of them now, as well as a pair of 361s. I also have a beefed up DP 044 with a 3/4 wrap. I rarely need or use the 044. I used one of the 361s to cut up a bunch of rounds last week. Holly and Doug fir mostly. Used a 25 inch bar, sliced and diced. Used one of the 026s last week to cut up some smaller limbs into firewood too. Great little saws. Those things will drive a 20 inch 3/8 standard bar no problem.

I also sold the last of my 1123 saws on CL. I am down to a box of parts for them and some bars and chains. No more 025, 250, 210, 230, 021, 250, and an 025 parts saw.

Default Re: firewood saw

Prior to me using the Stihl's that I have now, I used a Mini Mac 35 (12" bar), for the small limb work from 2" to 6" bucking, my Mac 10-10 Automatic (16" bar), for the 6" to 10", then I would use my Pro Mac 60 (16" bar), for stuff that was 10" to 16", and after I would use my Pro Mac 700 (24" bar) for the bigger stuff, and for the tree felling.
Now i use my 024 (16" bar), for the limbing from 2" to about 8", my 034 (16" bar) for stuff from 8" to about 14". for the rest I use my 044 (20" bar), for the bigger stuff, and the tree felling.
Reason I do this, is that I can't stand in one spot for too long, and with the saws that I use, or used to use in these sizes of cutting, is for the weight of them, and each saw step from liming to finishing the tree, was quicker, and had more power to use.
Prolonged weight bearing is also a big factor for me (low back injury from 8 years ago). This is the reason also that I cut fire wood the way that I do, and with so many saws in my line up to cut fire wood with. Not by choice, I have no other way to do it.
I used to only use a couple of chain saws to cut fire wood with. Mainly I used my Pro Mac 60, and my Pro Mac 700, but occasionally I ran my Mac 10-10Automatic, but that was before my back injury, and I could cut fire wood all day.
Now I'm lucky to cut for a couple of hours at a time, for a couple of times in a day, some times I only last an hour, and have to call it a day. So now i need to get as much as I can get done in the time I can cut in a day, otherwise I would be a lot longer getting everything cut up to heat the house for the winter, because fire wood is the only heat source that I have for right now. Bruce.

I didn't vote on the Poll because my combo wasn't listed.
262xpg and an Oleomac 952 for the smaller stuff.
I like the Oleomac I know many dislike them but they are well made saws, OK they aren't all Mag. but that doesn't mean they aren't good.
Hell lots of car parts are made of plastic now and modern cars are pretty durable.
The 262xpg is in a class of it's own for Firewood. Light grunty and will rev if you need it to.
If you only had to have one saw I would still take my 262 over any modern saw.
Disadvantages are small mount bar and the antivibe system.

What are the old Olymac saws like. I know where there is a pile of them not too far from me, in the attic of a small engine repair shop. Bruce.
