holy shit check this out A father and son are being flown to hospital after a chainsaw blew up in their faces, giving one of them burns to almost one-third of his body. The two men suffered serious burns on a property at Miva, northwest of Gympie in Queensland, after petrol ignited while they were refuelling their chainsaw. The AGL Action Rescue Helicopter was rushed to the scene at 9.35am (AEST) on Tuesday and met paramedics treating the men at the homestead. AGL Action Rescue crewman Scott Reeman said colleagues at the property acted quickly, taking the men to a nearby dam to cool them off as quickly as possible. "At this stage, we are unsure what caused the petrol to ignite," he said. "A 25-year-old male has suffered both partial and full thickness burns to over 30 per cent of his body and is in a serious condition. "The older male has serious burns to his hands." The two men have been airlifted to Royal Brisbane Hospital http://au.news.yahoo.com/a/-/latest/...ns-father-son/ |

| Must have been, otherwise they really over worked the saw and started refueling it. But we have worked our saws hard then fueled them straight up again even spilling fuel all over it, it just steams offs no fire. Gotta be smoking, the amount of people I see smoking while fueling thing (like my groundie...) is just unbelievable. |

might have been a case of metal gas can, guy didnt ground himself and pr the chainsaw and while filling up the saw stored energy in his body then hit a metal part of the saw with the metal gas can and spark ignited the fumes ???

Funny thing tough, they proved it on Myth Busters a couple years ago, that a lite cigarette, wasn't hot enough to ignite gas. Other than a lighter, or a match could cause the explosion, have no other ideas. Bruce.

Interesting thing is the article said full thickness burns on one guy. That's right down to the bone, which, as an ex firefighter, I really doubt would happen from a petrol burn like that. That being said, how much of the rest of the article is sensationalism? 3rd degree burns I'd agree with. 30% of his body, well, quite likely. Even with 1st degree burns only he'd not be having a great time. No idea what could have made the chainsaw explode. Leaking carby? |

I smoke all the time, when i was a mechanic,i pulled fuel tanks with fuel and smoked, its not so much the liquid that burns, but its the fumes,I was proved this point with 2 gas cans, one full with a gallon of gas and the other just emptied,i put a lit cigarette out in the one that was full, but the empty one actually flared up,chances are the saw was vaporlocked and had some pressure in the fuel system or possibly a faulty electrical component.

Recently one of our local tree loppers was refueling his travel tower. It caught fire and was a total write off, luckily he wasnt hurt.He wasnt smoking but the motor was still very hot.His theory was the exhaust had a burning ember in it due to a build up of carbon. He had been running 2 stroke mix in an unleaded motor.Has any one else heard of this theory? or was it an insurance job.

After much experimenting in my younger days I conclude that fuel isn't that easy to ignite but fumes ignite easiest. I could stub out a cigarette in liquid fuel, but vapours are what ignites easiest. Being hot means more vapour around, be bloody careful, and give smoking up unless you're a pig in a weber with hickory chips.

As an ex firie, I can say that liquids and solids don't actually burn at all. It's the flammable vapors coming off substances that burns. Substances that break down or evaporate at low temperatures, like petrol, tend to burn well or become explosive quite quickly.
