Hey Guys, Just thought id tell you about my experience with my Oleo Mac 981. I purchesed the saw in june this year so I have had it for a little over 3 months. I am usually a Stihl man but went with the Oleo Mac to fill the gap in my saw size range and because of various people telling me they where good value for money....After a good sales speal aswell. ![]() Anyway.... Basically I have used the saw on 4 occasions for any extended period of time over half a hour or so and the story goes as follows. 1.First time i used the saw... Cut up some firewood, chain tensioner broke. This was repaired and cost me $18.00. 2. Second time i used the saw on a big old man pine log, about 1 hour into use the saw compltely stopped and the starter could not be pulled. Turned out that the needle sprocket in the clutch had decintergrated!!! fixed under waranty, cost me 2 hours in downtime. 3. Was using saw on gum log, stalled for some reason and as i pulled to start it, the starter pulley seized, making the saw un-usable. had to come back and finish the job the next day, 4 hours downtime. Found out to be a ceased starter pulley, replaced under waranty! 4. After starter cord fixed and other things, hoping for a good job as other mid size saw was getting fixed. Had to put the spring back on the starter assembily 4 times during the day and replace one snaped cord. 1 hour downtime... to add to this... at the business end of the day, when the large stem was to be blocked up, the saw began to play up. It no longer idled and i had to start it unsafely on full throttle to try and finish the job, in the end the saw completely stopped. Had to use the 88 to finish the job!!!!! Needless to say, I wrote and angry email to Mowac, the distributor in nz at what a piece of sh%@t the saw was and I wanted my money back. Dropped the saw into the dealer. He rung me the next day and said that the saw had LEAN SEIZED!!!!. He tryed to blame my stihl fuel!!! The saw was sent to the distributor for a "manufacturers inspection" which has taken over a week and a half in which time I have had to purchase a Stihl 460 to get my work finished but do you think they even care!!! A phone call was made to me from the distributor saying that the lean seize was caused by an air leak that had developed as a result of manufacture defect. I asked him for my money back, he said no and that he had replaced the barrel and piston and it was good as new!!!! what is this Crap!!! he didnt care that it took so long and that I had to get a new saw!!! not his problem!! So I have to pick up the crap saw later this week, try sell it on Trademe or sumthing, what a joke!!! Why did I even try.... ![]() I have a good mind to write to the jerks in Italy that make the saws!!! |

I paid $1149 for the oleo mac with a 24" bar. are usually around $1600 retail, was cheaper than dealers could buy them.... I payed $2100 for my 460 with an upgrade to 25" bar at an extra $100. large difference to trade up but worth it!! |

I love my 981. great power to weight ratio, runs like a dream. I live in Australia where we have many very dense hardwoods. I have a 26" ProTop bar fitted and I would put t up to anything. It'll do a 10hr day cutting dried Ironbark and i can fill it hot. If you are having trouble with your 981 it will be something that you did wrong. There are fewer chainsaws that are as tough.
