I am looking to purchase a Dolmar 7900 through a local dealer who provides great service. This saw seems to have become highly regarded. I have been undecided up to today whether to go for the Dolmar or the Stihl 460. My local Stihl dealer provides poor service, and a friend of mine was treated like garbage by him today. Seeing that I am now through with Stihl (due to the poor dealer support), the Dolmar 7900 is my choice but I do not know which bar and chain are the best for me. I will be cutting some very large logs and would like a 24" bar. The Dolmar is sold as a power head only. I like Stihl bars and chains, but it seems that Stihl bars are not compatible with Dolmar saws. Any suggestions?

Go with at least half of your average tree diameter.Better yet find the biggest tree you'll be cutting and go wih half the size of that[considering the saw will handle it].

| The 7900 use the standard "large Husky" bar mount -"everyone" makes them, except Stihl. It is possible to use a Stihl "medium" mount bar, but you need an adaptor (have been sold by Baileys in California and Madsens I believe). You may have to modify the bar mount and adapter slightly as well, as it isn't allways a direct fit....... |

Thank you Newguy18 and Sawtroll for the quick response. Needing to modify the stihl bar is extremely useful info. I am seriously considering a Woodsman pro 30RC or Woodsman pro SC from Baileys / or / Oregon LGX from Amicks for the bar. |

Well here we go...If you are buying a great saw like the 7900, why not buy a great bar? Why not buy the bar that will out last the Stihl bars 10 fold? Check out the GB Titanium line. Heck buy one from someone else, off eBay or from a local guy. I guarantee you will be absolutely amazed. A 28 inch bar fits nicely on that sized saw. I would expect you have a smaller saw to do the limbing. With Great Esteem, Scott.

Asking Scott if you should get a muffler mod is like asking a lion if he likes meat - the answer is given........

Some saws do not respond well to modding. the larger professional saws almost always respond great. The 24 inch Ti bar will not be in the States until late May. See if you can locate one off eBay. I can not believe the back orders on these bars. No shortage of Muffler mods.

I've never ran a GB bar, but they sure look nice, I also here the metal they use is much harder than the soft metal Oregon uses. Here's my 7900 with a Dolmar aka Oregon Power Match bar. |

We hear alot of things don`t we? I`ve run a bunch of GB bars, Jeff Sikkema is a friend of mine, he was the original GB distributor so I got to try many sizes and models. I`d rate the Ti bars about on par with an ES, maybe, certainly no better. The lesser GB bars like the Pro Top and Pro Cut IMO are about on par with a Powermatch or Pro Lite but they were a little cheaper so they held that edge. Now that GB is owned by Stens, who if I`m not mistaken is owned by Oregon, I wonder how the quality will be? Oregon`s ownership of Windsor did nothing for Windsor`s quality.

I always had bad luck with every stihl product i've owned so i refuse to try anything else they make.It wasn't mechanical or else i would have fixed it,i guess just no guts to them.

I don't see GB bars lasting much longer than Stihl bars let alone 10 fold, but there Ti bars do look interesting.
