No more 5100s from Dolmar? The 5105 looks the same as the 5100. The 270 is the smoothest saw that Stihl makes: 2.9/2.9 m/s^2 vibration rating (left/right measured). |

| http://www.dolmar.com/productcatalog/product/5341/index.html The Makita version appears to be the DCS5030 and both are already on the ground in Europe. Interestingly there was never a Makita version of the 5100S, and only the US got it although there was an 'S' version of the 4600 in Europe and I think here too. The rumours are that the 'S' type coil (the grey, 14,500RPM vs the standard 13,500RPM red coil) will be dropped and supposedly a cat muffler for the US but we'll see.... I have teal blue 6400/7900, and also have a little DCS410 here ATM that I've been fettling today. (general service, chain sharpen, muffler mod, etc) It's my sisters, she had her Mak before I had mine and I had no idea. My stepfather has one too...... |

I've got a 5100-S and they are a great little saw. I also have two 7900's as well, one modded, one stock, but both with the new Heavy Duty filter kits. Matt. |

30% increased cooling and an updated air filter on the 5105. But you have to buy the updated muffler. I did. Need to write a letter to Dolmar and tell them that part of the 5105 isn't right. Great 50cc saw pulling a 3/8ths 18" all day long.

Use extra oil in your mix for that engine. They get hot on the exhaust side of the cylinder and will scuff if your not careful.

![]() Also, the 5105 obviously is heavier, even though they won't admit it. It looks like the Germans just don't have a good "nose" for ergonomics, as Stihl has the same problem with the MS261, as it looks....... They really had the same problem with the 260 as well, but that one sort of was saved by the light weight - not so with the 261 and the Dolmars! | |

Compared to the old MACs, all these saws are dream machines! I have to agree though that the trend on newer saws is going in the wrong direction. AV is generally better, but the added weight and bulk is not. The smog stuff was just a Congressional lobby that the EPA jumped on. It was pushed through by John Deere who does not even make/lable saws any more. |

| Very true, I've seen the odd person that has both saws say they prefer the handling of the 5100 over the 346 when they own both saws. Admittedly it's only a few, but it goes to show everyone's different. (and yes, some of us are more different than others ) When it comes to fit and feel in particular, some people are far more 'particular' than others too. Way back in another lifetime when I raced cars, my team mate when I first started racing cars (open wheelers) didn't really care where his gear lever sat in relation to the steering wheel, or where his pedals were positioned, close enough was good enough. Me however.... Talk about a prima donna.... The gear lever had to be exactly right, positioned just so that as my right hand moved off the steering wheel the gear knob was just there, literally a natural wrist movement to the side, no cranking back of the wrist as my team mate had too. The detents in the gearbox had to be adjusted so that they provided the right 'weight' in the throw, juuust tight enough so that the gear lever didn't pop out of gear under brakes. We had to modify the shape of the pedals so that they were in exactly the right position, I insisted on a heal plate angled across the floor of the cockpit so that the heels of both feet were held in exactly the right positions for the pedals, particularly as I left foot braked (clutchless down changes ) but still be able to heel and toe without effort if I needed to.The rake and height of the seat, the height and reach of the steering wheel, etc etc. I was fastidious. I was a pain in the arse for my mechanic, (although I did most of the mods myself, hey, I was chief engineer ) but if something was out a little I felt compromised, it needed to feel 'right' or I felt it was costing me time.As I said, my team mate couldn't give a stuff, he even refused the offer for me to modify his gear change to reduce the weight and throw for him. (the throw was only a few inches at most anyway) Even now, SWMBO has said a few times I'm pedantic when i get in a car and chuck a hissy fit if things are out a bit ![]() Anyway, I understand where Niko is coming from, some of us are prima donnas, and the rest are just insensitive bastards..... |
