Hey Guys, I have a Stihl 331 Farm Boss with a 22" bar (yeah I know, I am hoping to get a pro model over from the states next year). Currently it only has dogs on one side, where do you get upgrades for them? I need dual dogs because I am working on some wonkyassed fallen trees, and sometime I have no choice but to cut where I cant get the dog hooked in. I live in South Aus, so I guess if I can buy it locally that would be great, or I can buy it over the net. ALSO, I just had it in for a service, and they turned down the oil to what I guess it is "supposed" to be, but since I am cutting dried redgum I like to have a higher oil flow, it used to go through a tank of oil for every tank of fuel, now its going through about 1/3 tank of oil for a tank of fuel. On the 331 how do you adjust this? Thanks guys. |

Howdy, For the life of me I can't find a Stihl 331 mentioned anywhere. However they did just come out with the 311 Farm Boss. Is this the saw you're talking about? Bailey's sells upgrade dogs for that saw here: Bailey's - Felling Dog for Stihl But that's only a single upgraded bumper spike for the inside of the bar. I'd be tempted to think the double dogs w/roller chain catcher upgrade I got for my 361 would also fit on the 311 Farm Boss, as the same set will fit on either my 028, 260p, or 361. It's a pretty versatile kit. The Stihl part numbers for the upgrade parts I have are as follows: Ref # Part # Qty needed Part name: 20 1135 664 0501 1 Bumper spike (B) 21 1135 664 0500 1 Bumper spike (B) 22 9008 319 0960 2 Hexagon head screw M5x12 (B) 23 9214 320 0700 2 Lock nut M5 (B) 24 1135 650 7700 1 Chain catcher (B) I'm not sure how much power the 311 has (if indeed that's the saw you have), but the really aggressive dog kits can tempt you to overwork the saw with too much leverage, instead of just allowing them to better grip the material you're working on. Be careful with how you use them. Also, for the oiler adjustment, the manual for the 311 shows this section, which is pretty normal on alot of the newer stihl saws. If you flip the saw upside down you should see a small hole/cutout/slotted bolt head that shows the symbol illustrated in this picture. You want to crank it usually clockwise, to the full open position for the most output. |

Mmmmm, apparently the 311 and 391 Farm Bosses both came out. The above info should work equally well for either. Unless you did actually mean 331, and then it should STILL work, but I'm banking on a typo at this point. If it is indeed a 311 FB or a 391 FB, and you need a manual, let me know and I'll point you in the right direction for a free one; or failing that, I'll have one sent to you. I tend to operate on the "the more oil the better" theory, and crank mine up all the way and leave them there. There are also High Output oiler parts (2 parts) which are available for most of the saws which will allow you to put out more oil if you decide you need it. They're dropin replacements of the two existing oiler parts. |

Yes, you are right 311 Farm Boss (typo) 59cc engine, 6.1Kw I didn't realise these were Stihl upgrades, I thought they must have been third party. I think..... That the 331 does not show an image in regards to the oil flow, I remember that being a selling point they were using on the 391, but I am not 100%, I guess I should have looked first. For cutting dry redgum, which is almost like iron (it sure makes the sparks fly, even when it is self-feeding), how much oil should I be going through? On an unrelated note, I just was at the Stihl shop looking for a stump vice..... They have a small (pathetic little thing) for $35au and the large is $54au........... ouch. EDIT: I was typing while you added more. I will do a search and see if I can find the manual at home, I looked online but didn't find it. The only thing that puts me off using too much oil is the price...... But of course if it saves a bar it is worth it. |

| lol you're still typing "331".... cut it out =P Well, that snipet of image I posted is FROM the 311 FB manual. It may not show it in black/on white, it may instead have a raised plastic area that just has that symbol on it. Or it might not. EIther way, on the bottom of your saw there's a slotted bolt that will turn about 45degrees each direction. Find it and crank it all the way clockwise. (Dont try to turn it toooo hard, like I said it only moves 45degrees or so of total travel) Send me a PM with your email address and I'll send you a pdf version of the 311 manual. |

Only problem with a dual dog kit on a 1127 or 1140 saw (310/311) is that they have plastic side covers and not metal, like the 361, 441, etc. Being softer they do not take the pressure of levering on the outer dog that the pro saws take. Also there are subtle differences between the pro saws and dual dog kits for them. My 1127 PL does not show an outer dog or dual dog kit for them. They have a slightly larger inside dog option for them. I have never run an outboard dog on any of my 1127 saws that I have owned.

WT, that was why I mentioned on baileys that it's only a single inner dog upgrade. When I got the stihl double dog upgrade kit, it had mentioned that some saws which aren't specifically designed for the use of double dogs can be modified to fit the kit, by drilling a hole(s) in the appropriate spot. Seems like too much trouble to me though for a saw that's not made to have that much leverage put on it. Thanks for the clarification though WT, I didnt realize the cover plate was plastic on that saw. Sillybgoat, I'd suggest if you want a more aggressive dog, you just go with the factory stock upgrade dog that goes on the inner side of the bar. The one from Baileys should work just fine for you. No reason to use double dogs on that saw. I emailed you that manual and re-PM'd you about the other stuff. |
