Default Do different spark plugs make a difference

Hi All,

I was just wondering if anyone has any comments about spark plugs. Are the brands which are better than others?

NGK or Bosch last longer than champion.

Avoid the Pongonesian brands. Saving a coupla bucks is bad economy IMO.

I have used Champion for years with my McCulloch chain saws, and I would clean them up once in a while.
I have tried Champion, and also Bosch in my 044, and 034. About the same, that I Have found.
Being that spark plugs are relatively cheap (some good bargains on eBay, for boxes of 10 plugs), I don't clean them up anymore. Cheaper to throw in a new one.
Also you can check here http://tiny.cc/ihLdD , to see what the manufacture of your chain saw recommends for plugs. Bruce.

I stick to NGK in the saws, they are still made in Japan.
I'm not too sure where the small engine Champs are made these days, or the small engine Bosch either.

I had a good run out of US made Champion Golds in my last petrol engined vehicle, (F100 with a fairly warm 351C) but that was eight years ago, and FWIW I only used NGK's in my race cars at the time.

I had some bad luck with one type of Champion plugs. They were those resistor types, that were not supposed to interfere with radios, and such. Those where a waist of money.
After a bit, they had no spark. I switched back to the regular Champion Plugs, and I never had a problem with them.
I just change the plugs in my saws, once a year, instead of cleaning them, like I used to.
If you have any questions, to what spark plugs are for your chain saws, just look at the link that I posted earlier. The plugs that are listed in this, for different makes and models of chain saws, pretty much have the same heat range, as the next.
To me it doesn't matter what brand you use, as long as it is recommended by your chain saw manufacture, heat range, and so on. Why do I say this, is because it doesnt matter what you use, there is a bad one in every brand of plug on the market. Go with what you think would work best for you. Bruce.

This company seems to think this plug is all that.

Has anyone tried this plug? If so did you notice more power / better fuel economy? They show that they sell them at Wal-Mart ewww
If they are all that I might have to step into that crummy store and get a few.

Straw,

Straw,
Overpriced snake oil IMO.

Stick with the majors when it comes to 'plugs, I've read of a number of E3 plugs failing including losing centre electrodes (they are made in China)

Best plug for a chainsaw from my experience is Bosch. I have tried NGK a few times over the last 35 years and I find their reliability is still the same ....... unpredictable.
My new 346XP Husqvarna came with a NGK, from new it had idle issues, I put a Bosch in and it runs fine. I am not trying to say all NGK plugs are bad, comparing car engines to chainsaw engines is a non issue. For small air cooled engine spark plugs I think Bosch did their homework on quality control.

We use Bosch plugs almost exclusively. WSR6F goes in most of our saws. I have seen failures with them though, electrodes breaking off and taking out the top ends. Maybe one in two thousand or so. Cheers, Simon.

I have yet to see a electrode breaking off a saws plug during normal operation. Having said that I have seen highly modified saws with fabricated detachable cylinder heads bending the plugs electrode.
Willard.

Yes, like I said, quite rare but does happen. These Bosch plugs are made in Brazil.

Good to know. I have always taken Bosch for granted but when I last looked [years ago LOL] they were made in Germany. At least they're not made in China.
