Default Dead Stihl MS180

While I was away, my daughter's boyfriend ran my MS180 without oil in the fuel. Saw died soon after. The saw was only a few months old and had little use.

Is this saw salvageable? What needs to be replaced?

The dealer told me that it would cost more for his shop to fix it than what a new MS180 would cost.

I was hoping that if I did the labor that I could fix it myself.

Just a quick glance at Ebay looks like $60 will get you a used piston, cylinder, and crank....hope that helps!

Unless your mechanically minded or know some who is and have the tools its disposable (as is by the way your daughters boyfriend). Depending on the damage a cylinder kit here (quality one) is around $250 aus. Most things can be repaired, but its all about economics.

Cheers

Tony

Thanks. I guess that I can save the chain bar, chain, owner's manual, and wrench. Oh well...

i would prolly try the yum cha cylinder kit quoted in post 2, its likely got a pretty crappy nicosil coating but the 180 is hardly going to be pulling a heap of load anyrate, then you can make the son inlaw rebuild it after him paying for the jug and piston.

btw i noticed your in the US where a new saw is not much more than the parts,

Talking Re: Dead Stihl MS180

Well you could sell the parts to recoup some of the loss.

A new 180 is about $200.

Thumbs up Re: Dead Stihl MS180

You can buy a cylinder kit from a after market company and rebuild it. They are fairly simple machines to work on.
