We own forest land in the Berkshires, so our saws see a lot of use. As a result, we spend more time than we like dealing with chains. I realize that it comes with the territory, but I'd still like to make things a bit more efficient -- if possible. I'm not really happy with the results we get when we sharpen the Stihl 63PM-55 we use with our MS 200Ts, so I'm hoping that some of you might have had success with a different type of chain. I understand that Oregon makes a .325 pitch chain that can be used with the MS 200T, so I'd like to hear from those of you who've used it. I also understand that the Oregon .325 chain comes in two types, so I'd like to know exactly what the Oregon crowd is using with the MS 200T. In short, I'd like to know if there are decent alternatives to the "round" corner cutters we get with the Stihl 63PM-55 chain. Thanks for your time... |

I have excellent luck, using Carlton chain saw chains here, on my farm. I mainly use semi chisel chain as well. I have Stihl chisel chain, but I find the semi chisel chain, will stay sharper for a little longer, then the chisel chain. Most of my wood, that i cut is a bit on the dirty side. We had our wood lot logged a couple years ago, and I have been using the tractor, to skid the tree tops out of the bush, and shoving them up into a pile, to cut up into fire wood later, so yes, a fair bit of dirt collects into the bark, of the stuff laying down in piles. I've also cut with Oregon chain, along side with the Carlton chain, and I find the Carlton, is a bit better quality chain, but each to their own. Carlton, is also a bit cheaper chain, to buy as well, then of Oregon chain. .325 pitch in a semi chisel chain, is the way that I'd go, and both the semi, and chisel chain, is a round cut chain, unless you go with square ground chain. Bruce.
