When i bought my Stihl 290 i didn't know i would also be getting a chainsaw mill, so i didn't know to ask about ripping chains. I guess there isn't an available ripping chain for .325? sorry for such a novice question. Is going from a .325 to a .375 chain as simple as getting a different bar, or is it more involved than that? thanks, Dan. |

You'd have to change the drive sprocket too, both have to be the same pitch. MS290 for milling, good luck.

short and small diameter logs. i'm not milling timbers for a house or anything, just small boards for small projects.

that 290 will over heat and crap out on you. ripping is different because your cutting with the grain flow rather than against it. another thing to keep in mind is you need higher chain speeds to rip cut. try refrigerating your bar oil before you pour it into the saw. it helps to keep things cool because theres going to be alot of heat generated by ripping. semi chisel with low rakers works for me. i set my top plate cutter angle to 20 degrees and rakers cut down to 0.40 and it works great for me.
