Default Cascade Saw Restoration

I restore old metal saws as a hobby here in the PNW. Pre-1985 big cc logging saws that have been forgotten and covered in crud. I don't sell any saws or parts just picken on the weekends to find the next project for my collection and to keep this old logger busy. I have been restoring chainsaws for many years and just found this site. Many thanks

Those reds are a nice project to restore back to OEM spec's. What is the restoration your looking to do as those parts are in stock and have all filters and OEM carb kits for those saws to bring them back to factory spec's. I also have the OEM paint for those also in stock to bring them back to showroom looking and running condition.

I like anchors 80cc and bigger I'll get it running no matter what boat it's tied too. I'm impressed on the power on the new Pro Mac 650 (Thick Ring) that just came off the bench for a customer very rare one comes through the shop.

What's in the anchor collection?

I have those HS kits for the 90 and as well for the 2100. Whatever you want done to those saws or what level of restoration fits your needs I'll be glad to help in any way...it's what I do. I don't sell parts or saws I restore them to factory spec's for my customers or myself. I have rare ignition and saw parts along with rare carb kits for all brands to restore just about any saw that comes through my shop

Saw chips include new OEM carb kit for HS-124A or SDC series as both came on that saw and in stock. New fuel filter, clean and inspect muffler screen, measure spark output, inspect/replace kill switch wire, compression test, new OEM spark plug (NGK/Bosch). Ring size for your saw is 58mm x 1.8mm and those can be had but not in stock after market ISO 2000 grade from Italy. Replacing rings is easy on that saw it finding a cylinder gasket thats rough. Eighty saw chips includes everything listed except the rings..

What size sprocket is on the 125 and easy math from there just match the chain links to the 28" bar and replace sprocket if needed. No sprockets in stock for that app sorry. Rings for that 58mm x 1.8mm are pricy @ $55.00 for the set not including shipping. With the RTV blue gasket sealant might mess with the squish distance inside jug on that big saw unless I have the right gasket thats an app that would scare me and with that rare saw it's worth the right cylinder gasket to hunt down...hope that helps

The problem with the bar I have is it for 10-10 size bar studs and my 125 is a few thous bigger. I figure if i may find a base gasket and figure out the thickness and see if any bulk gasket comes close.

Sure you can get gasket in bulk and use a new blade to cut, then all you need is a ring compression kit new rings and your set. When installing new rings I use steel wool 00 grade and rub the insinde of the walls down as the new rings have something to grab on to and seet with high psi everytime. Then clean the jug extra clean and then do it!! again Use a q-tip with good 2-stroke oil and lube the walls down heavy just before you install the rings. Use rubber mallet and just a light tap and slides on everytime like butter. 5/8 drill bit and do a bar mod

I installed a 30" X 3/8 pitch X 0.050", bar and chain on my Stihl 084, last year. What I done, was pulled the bar mounting studs, stuck the threaded part, that threads into the saw, into the chuck of a drill, that I had placed into the jaws of the vice, turned the drill on, and used it as a lathe, took a file, and turned the studs down, so that they would fit the slot of the bar. I had to do a little filing, inside the slot of the bar, and the notches, where the oil runs out of the saw, for the oilier, I just made it a little bigger, so that, the oil runs into the oil slot, in the guide bar. Works pretty good, that way. Bruce.

Logger Ally,
Welcome to the website! We do a little saw restoring here, too. Fun stuff to bring the old ones back to life, especially the ones that can out cut and out last this new stuff. I notice you were talking about some 125 stuff, if you need to I think I can get you piston rings considerably cheaper than $55.00 for those saws.
Also, I noticed (unless I misunderstood) that you advised using a rubber mallet to install a piston and fresh rings into a saw block????? Gotta tell you man if you need to hammer the piston into a block then there must be something wrong....I can usually install a piston and rings with my thumbnail back into the block. But then I guess I am always interested in new techniques, but sure seems a little risky to me.
Would be nice to see some pics of the saws you have done, and no I'm not worth a damn with this computer either, It's Tina that does that part....

Hmmmm,
I was wondering about the double OO steel wool trick. I have used it to polish chrome bumpers on cars and such, but did not think it would be aggressive enough to make a good cross hatch inside a cylinder to get rings to seal or break the glaze or remove any scratches inside the cylinder wall. That must take alot of extra elbow grease. Do you not use a hone for some reason? Without a good cross hatch pattern the rings will be ok for the initial start up or two, but they will not seat properly and varnish up allowing excessive blow by, and therefore losing compression shortly after overhaul......

Ring/Rings seat very well with that app..no hone needed and never have a saw loose compression after the fact. $55.00 is for OEM, sure after market is $22.00 for a set but I will not use them. There's a fb page to see saws that have been restored on the bench or in my collection @Cascade Saw Restoration good luck!!

One light tap with the rubber mallet is sometimes needed..sure most can slide on fairly easy with little force if that..no I don't advise hitting the jug with a hammer to install new rings you will destroy the rings and jug all at once.

OEM rings for 125's can be found for less than $55 quite regularly if you know where to look. I suppose a guy needs to make a few bucks on them though.
