So today I bought a brand stihl ms 362. I've never owned a new saw and was very excited to use it. It started up fine but as soon as I tried to give it a little gas it would abruptly die. After letting it idle for a good 5 minutes I tried again and the problem continued to repeat itself. *note I am working at about 5500 feet. Hasn't been a problem for me before but..? When I would start it at the half choke/warm start it would run fine as long as i didn't completely let off the throttle for more than a few seconds. If I let it idle and tried to throttle up it would die until being restarted. I was using it to buck up a 30" larch already on the ground and the saw was temperamental the whole time. When it was running I was extremely impressed but was more or less frustrated by the whole experience after spending a big chunk of change on it. I am planning on going back to the dealer tomorrow and seeing what was up but I thought I'd see if you guys had any advice. Thanks |

Sounds like the low speed jet needs to opened a touch.

Sounds like L tune also. But I knows some people in NM that said at their elevation the new strato saws run for crap and seem powerless. Theirs was a stihl 441. I dont know how your 5500 compares to where their at, but Good luck. |

Sounds like those guys are right. I've heard same as Cut4Fun about the strato saws, but doesn't make sense to me. We used to run 044's and 066 Magnums from ~4000 feet around Helena, MT up to 9000 feet down in AZ, CO, UT and up to 8,500 in The Frank Church in ID without changing anything. Hope you gotta simple carb issue, but I don't know enough about the strato saws to help ya. Don't throw it over the Mountain yet, might be a really simple thing. Might be a defective thing. Might be a free saw in the deal!!! Good Luck---Let us know when you do find out, maybe we can all learn a little. Thanks.

So I broke out the manual this morning and adjusted the low end jet. The saw works like a charm now, not a single problem with it. The saw has about 4 or 5 tanks on it now, and is an absolute beast of timber destruction. I'm almost a little embarrassed I made this thread now for how easy of a fix it was but live and learn right? haha. Thanks for the troubleshooting. |

Thanks for the follow up. Question: How did the L jet get that far off on a new saw? Have you made any adjustments for altitude??? You said you're cutting around 5500' right? I remember Windthrown posting some stuff about the strato saws really going to crap at high altitude...just wondering now, what altitude and is it a problem with every strato carb or majority of them or what? Anyway...glad you got it figured out. Happy cutting. If you think of it, after you give that saw a good run-in period, post your opinion of the saw. Strato is where the market is headed, then I'd be interested to start hearing something about them.---just went back through the thread and saw that your saw wasn't new...forget the first question. Thanks, Mike |
